Women's Soccer Catapults Past Washington & Jefferson Thanks to DeCicco

WASHINGTON, Pa. -- Following a tough road loss on Thursday, John Carroll University Women's Soccer got back on track on Saturday.

In a road contest at Washington & Jefferson, the Blue Streaks found enough offense and played stout defense to ensure a win.

The Blue Streaks secured a 1-0 victory over the Presidents in Pennsylvania on Saturday afternoon.

The Blue and Gold started out hot, getting off the bus without any lag. The JCU offense put up pressure in the early going, with a couple of shots and the first shot on goal of the game. Maura Palmer did the honors in the 20th minute.

As the first half elapsed, the Blue Streaks continued to enjoy possession, keeping the hosts without a shot. Then in the 42nd minute, the Blue Streaks broke through.

Bella DeCicco played the hero for the Blue Streaks. The junior found the back of the net for the first goal of her JCU career, and it came at a great time. The Fairview Park native scored off an assist from Taylor Wohleber

In the waning seconds of the first stanza, the Presidents had an opportunity, with a shot and a corner kick. But JCU turned away the chances with ease to keep things at 1-0 at the break.

The Blue Streaks charged out of the gate in the second half. Macey Malinky took a corner off a Brittany Dufalla shot, threatening the hosts. Nothing came of it, but the Blue Streaks maintained a relentlessness on offense, with a couple more shots.

Washington & Jefferson had a couple of shots, but nothing major until the 69th minute.

With 21 minutes left to play, the Presidents drew a penalty kick. The hosts drew a penalty kick after a foul on the Blue Streaks in the box. McKenna Lewis lined up for a shot to tie it, but Danielle DelGiudice stepped up in the clutch and turned it away. The Presidents then had another golden chance with a header a minute later, but again DelGiudice stood strong.

Gabriella Walter got a shot in the 76th minute, but things were quiet until picking up later on. The Presidents got a shot on goal, saved again by DelGiudice in the 85th minute.

The Blue Streaks held on for the victory and a major win.

With the triumph, the Blue Streaks advanced to 5-3-1 on the season.

Michael Marich's squad will be back in action on Tuesday vs. Penn State Behrend. That contest, to be held at Don Shula Stadium, will be the team's final non-conference affair.
