Women's Soccer Scores Goals in Bunches to Best Hiram at Home

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio -- The Blue Streaks started off their 2021 home campaign with fireworks early on against Hiram.

The Blue Streaks tallied three first-half goals en route to a 4-0 win at Don Shula Stadium on Wednesday evening.

It only took John Carroll University Women's three minutes to score its first goal of the game, courtesy of Brittany Dufalla on a penalty kick. Dufalla was raging down the sidelines and passed a crosser to Grace Monnin, who was fouled in the box by a Terrier defender, setting up the kick.

Seventeen minutes later, Monnin tacked on another goal just outside the box, burying it in the lower right hand corner to make it 2-0.

The scoring continued late in the first half. Gabriella Walter headed home a cross from Claire Hollern with two minutes left to take a 3-0 advantage into the locker room.

Despite not scoring a goal, Hiram went into halftime registering five shots on goal, only one less than John Carroll's six.

The Blue Streaks came out hot to start the second half. Dufalla added her second goal of the night in the 50th minute to put the score at 4-0. It was a sneaky play that surprised many with how quickly the play developed.

With the goal, Dufalla notched her second 2-goal game of her career. The first came against Westminster earlier in the season.

With the game already in hand, the Blue Streaks emptied most of their bench, including Tierney Hemphill replacing Danielle DelGiudice in goal. The freshman Hemphill recorded her first collegiate save in the 83rd minute.

The Blue and Gold outshot the Terriers, 14-10, but were an even 8-8 for shots on goal for the match.

John Carroll was able to control the game from start to finish by adding their third straight win of the season.

"I'm glad I was able to set the tone and bring the energy," Dufalla said. "We have a lot of depth so I'm excited to see what we can bring to the season."

This was John Carroll's largest margin of victory in a shutout since a 6-0 win against Marietta back on October 20, 2018.

The Blue Streaks have also scored nine goals in the first four games of the season for the first time since 2011.

John Carroll will travel to Meadville, Pennsylvania, where they will take on the Allegheny Gators on September 11 at 4 p.m.
