Men's Basketball Tumbles in Road Rivalry Contest in Berea

BEREA, Ohio -- On Wednesday evening, the John Carroll Men's Basketball team traveled to Berea for an Ohio Athletic Conference matchup with the Yellow Jackets of Baldwin Wallace. A fast start by BW and a slow response from JCU set the tone for the rest of the contest.

The Blue Streaks stumbled from start to finish, leading to a 101-64 loss.

The first half for the Blue Streaks showed plenty of encouraging signs. After missing three starters in the lineup the last two games, the Blue Streaks saw Mason Trubisky and Eric Hanna return to the court. Meanwhile, the Yellow Jackets played solid basketball throughout the first half, shooting well. Baldwin Wallace jumped out to a 21-9 lead early on.

JCU continued to fight, however. A strong comeback led by PJ Flannery and David Gentry brought the Blue Streaks back to within three at 33-30 late in the first half. Unfortunately for the Blue & Gold, the Yellow Jackets remained patient on offense. Baldwin Wallace hit a clutch buzzerbeater to send JCU running into the tunnel down 52-40.

In final 20 minutes, the Blue Streaks struggled to get anything going. Baldwin Wallace took advantage, ballooning the lead from 12 to 27. JCU tried, but could not staunch the bleeding. The Yellow Jackets' shooting numbers jump off the page, as they shot 52% from the field and 33.3% from 3-point range. The Blue Streaks continued to play hard and fight late, but nothing went right and the Blue and Gold fell 101-64.

As a team, John Carroll did not shoot well, going 31.3% from the field, including 4-of-23 from 3-point range. JCU scored 18 of their 64 points on free throws. A total of 17 turnovers by the Blue Streaks gave BW opportunities to put the game away late. David Gentry and Jackson Sartain led the team in scoring with 12 and 11 points, respectively.

Looking ahead, the Blue Streaks will return to University Heights with their first home game of the second half of the OAC schedule against Muskingum this Saturday, looking to forget about Wednesday evening and get back in the win column.
