Upset Bid Falls Just Short for Men's Basketball at #11 Mount Union

ALLIANCE, Ohio -- On a chilly Wednesday night, John Carroll Men's Basketball traveled to Alliance to take on the Purple Raiders of Mount Union. The Blue Streaks faced adversity throughout against a talented Purple Raiders team, but showed grit for all 40 minutes.

The Blue Streaks eventually lost after a hard-fought affair in the home gym of the No. 11 team in the country, 89-80.

In the first half, The Purple Raiders started strong, but the Blue Streaks battled back. A tough first-half effort led by Jackson Sartain (20 pts, 9 rebounds) had JCU consistently in the game. Shots were falling in the first for the Purple Raiders, however. Ethan Stanislawski and Christian Parker led Mount Union, making several tough shots, but the Blue Streaks gave them all they could handle.

The difference in the first half was an early run by the Purple Raiders, but the Blue Streaks hung in and entered the locker room down 44-34, the game still firmly within their grasp.

In the second half, the name of the game was intensity and grit.

From the jump, the Blue and Gold hounded the Purple Raiders, pestering their stars on defense and finding plenty of clean looks on offense.

However, Mount Union executed as they did in the first, jumping out to a quick 14-point lead. The Blue and Gold didn't back down from the challenge though, and went punch for punch with the nationally-ranked Purple Raiders.

The veterans led the charge in the second half for the Blue Streaks. Jackson Sartain, William Wallace, PJ Flannery, Hugh Brown, and Mason Trubisky all had significant contributions down the stretch for JCU. Wallace and Brown gave the Mount Union frontcourt fits, Flannery and Trubisky grinded down low, and Jackson Sartain drove the offense forward. Wallace scored 8 straight points late in the second for the Blue Streaks, and several defensive stops put the Blue and Gold down just five points with 3 minutes left.

However, the Purple Raiders held firm, and several clutch plays in the final minutes gave Mount Union the win.

Jackson Sartain and William Wallace led the Blue Streaks in scoring with 20 and 19 points, respectively. For the Purple Raiders, Christian Parker and Ethan Stanislawski poured in 28 and 18.

The Blue and Gold have a quick turnaround this week, as they head out on the road again Friday to play the Comets of Capital University.
