Football Easily Handles Lengthy Road Trip to Wilmington

WILMINGTON, Ohio — A lengthy road trip did not take the air out of the sails of John Carrol Football.

The Blue Streaks roared past the Wilmington Fightin' Quakers on Saturday at Williams Stadium, SCORE.

With the victory, the Blue Streaks advance to 3-1 on the year, 3-0 in Ohio Athletic Conference play.

John Carroll promptly marched down the field on the team's opening drive after receiving the ball first. On the seventh play of the first drive, Joe Collins connected with Joe Torok for a 35-yard touchdown pass.

That scoring strike set the tone for an offensive party for JCU.

The Blue Streaks' defense quickly forced a Wilmington three-and-out on the hosts' opening drive.

A 34-yard Demerius Goodwin run on the first play of the drive set up JCU just outside the red zone. Wilmington forced a fourth and 3 at their own 17-yard line, but Evan McVay dashed for 4 yards for the first down. A few plays later, Yanni Volas connected on a 29-yard field goal.

Following a quick Wilmington possession, Collins loosened up the Quaker defense with a couple short passes before handing off to McVay. The sophomore sensation dashed 42 yards untouched to paydirt.

And so, the score stood 17-0 JCU after the first quarter.

A Garrett Sparks sack early in the third ensured JCU would start with solid field position. Two plays after a 35-yard connection from Collins to Brennan Fugh, Collins found Nate Trudeau for a 7-yard score.

Wilmington drove to the JCU 33 on the next drive, but the Blue Streak defense stood fast there, halting the drive on a fourth down stop.

John Carroll's offense then was shut down on fourth down from the Wilmington 1-yard line. The Fightin' Quakers gained no traction and had to punt, and the ensuing boot only traveled 18 yards.

On the very next play, Collins sought out Tadas Tatarunas, and for the fourth straight game, the Mentor native hauled in a TD pass. This strike was from 23 yards out for a 31-0 lead, and there the score stood at half.

Wilmington got the ball first in the third quarter but had to punt. Goodwin made the hosts pay, firing 46 yards for a JCU touchdown.

The teams then traded punts, though Grant Gonya's was especially impactful, backing up Wilmington to their own 2-yard line. A Jake Phillips tackle for loss on third down forced another WC punt.

In response, Collins steered his final scoring drive of the day, concluding with a 10-yard touchdown pass to Daniel Gallagher, his first career score. JCU took a 45-0 lead into the fourth.

Gabe Lawson led the offense to start the fourth quarter, and marched JCU in position for a 3-yard Mason Sullivan rushing TD.

Following a WC three-and-out, Lawson moved JCU down the field again. The Valparaiso transfer finished things off with a 6-yard rushing scamper. And so the final score, 59-0.

John Carroll dominated just about every statistical category, including in yards, 641-98. JCU's backs combined for 375 rushing yards in 50 carries, led by Goodwin's 8 attempts for 99 yards. Sullivan tallied 80 yards, while McVay and Isaac Novak tabbed 68 yards apiece. Jaylen Johnson and Jack Cardaman each got their first collegiate carries.

Collins finished the day 22-of-28 passing for 266 yards and 4 touchdowns. Torok hauled in a team-high 7 catches for 78 yards. Fugh led the squad in receiving yards with 82.

Defensively, Tyler Thimons enjoyed another outstanding day with a team-high 7 tackles, adding a tackle for loss and sack. Chris Golson, Thomas Faron, Michael Palmer, Isaac Wilson, Jake Phillips, Justin Renner, Bricker Thiel, Garrett Sparks, Griffin Lidyard, and Nick Costanzo all garnered tackles for loss. Renner also picked off a pass.

With Wilmington in the rear view mirror, the Blue Streaks advance to face Marietta next Saturday. The game will honor Blue Streaks of the 1990's.
