Women's Soccer Wins at Wilmington Thanks to 2 Patrzyk Goals

WILMINGTON, Ohio – After enduring some tough contests against non-conference foes, John Carroll Women's Soccer looks to be hitting its stride entering conference play.

The Ohio Athletic Conference opener was proof positive, as the Blue Streaks nabbed a victory in southern Ohio.

The Blue Streaks secured a 2-1 victory over the Fightin' Quakers on Saturday evening to advance to 5-4-2 on the year.

Much of John Carroll's recent successes can be traced back to the offensive contributions of some talented forwards, including one star freshman: Emily Patrzyk. The freshman phenom has been on fire lately, and continued her excellent run tonight.

The Twinsburg native tied the freshmen record for goals in a season with 10, as Patrzyk scored both goals for John Carroll (one off a Madyson Rosado assist) in the victory.

The Blue Streaks didn't have any lag coming off the bus, as Rosado tallied a shot just 64 seconds into the match that Wilmington saved and JCU got a corner kick from it shortly after.

The teams traded chances as the game marched along. Mackenzie Stease made her first save of the contest in the 21st minute.

Not long after a Wilmington chance, there was a 50/50 ball at the JCU 40-yard line in the 31st minute. Juliana Kontul fought for the loose ball and won it. From midfield, she fired a through ball ahead. Wilmington's keeper burst out to the edge of the box looking to grab the ball. She missed, so Emily Patrzyk poked the ball ahead with just one defender to beat.

In a footrace down the left side, the freshman won and right-footed it into the center of the net for a 1-0 lead in the 31st minute.

But Wilmington was quick to respond.

Just 64 seconds later, the Fightin' Quakers got the game back to level. Alex Wilson found twine off an assist by Elizabeth Matthews.

Patryzk immediately got back on the attack, firing a shot on net. The Quakers got their own chances later in the half, but the horn sounded with the game tied at 1-1.

The Blue Streaks broke through to take the lead in the 55th minute, with some history to boot.

From just across midfield, Alli Malinky gently put forward a ball to Madyson Rosado up the right side. Rosado initially tried to center it, but the ball bounced off Malinky and back to Rosado. She gathered it near the corner and centered it once again.

This time, Patrzyk charged forward and met the ball with her right foot, one-bouncing it into the right corner of the net. With that, Patrzyk tied the JCU record for goals in a season with 10, set previously by Julie Scaffidi.

The remainder of the second half was very defensive, as the Blue Streaks wanted to sit back to make sure the Fightin' Quakers did not tie this one.

The Quakers did test Stease on a number of occasions, but the senior was not allowing anything. She finished with four saves in the victory.

With the win in hand, the Blue Streaks will look to push the winning streak to four on Wednesday, as Heidelberg will visit Don Shula Stadium.
