UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS - A disappointing end to a dreary October Night at Don Shula Stadium, as the John Carroll Blue Streaks fall 1-0 against the Otterbein Cardinals.
John Carroll falls to 7-7-2 overall and 3-3 in the Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC), while Otterbein improves to 8-4-2 on the year and 4-1-1 in the conference.
Both teams started the game slow, with few opportunities for an organized attack. In the eighth minute, Emily Patyzyk had a nice shot on goal, which was quickly turned away by Otterbein's Ella Schwertfager.
In the 15th minute, Gabby Walter sent a beautiful through ball to Patyzyk, who dribbled past one cardinal defender and took a shot, which hit the right side of the post.
The game would remain at a standstill, until the 35th minute, where forward Anjuli Anderson sped past a couple of John Carroll defenders, setting up Ava Burns for the lone goal of the evening. The Blue Streak defense would hold their own, and go into halftime down 1-0.
John Carroll would come out of the half aggressive, with Grace Monnin taking a nice shot on net which was turned away by Schwertfager. On the ensuing possession, Otterbein would put together a dangerous attack that was shut down by the gritty Blue Streak defense before any damage could be done.
In the 64th minute, Anderson took a strong shot from the right side of the box, even so, Mackenzie Stease held strong to the challenge in net.
Another great opportunity would come in the 86th minute, where John Carroll's Kathryn Shaffer took a shot from the right side, missing the Otterbin goal by inches and was the last true opportunity for the Blue and Gold.
Despite the losing effort, JCU outshoot Otterbein 14-12 with six shots on target.
The Blue Streaks are back at home, Saturday October 22nd, hosting the Comets of Capital University at 7 p.m.
