Early Offensive Flurry Secures Road Win over Mount Union for Women's Soccer

ALLIANCE, Ohio -- Last year, the Purple Raiders got the best of the Blue Streaks in Alliance with a 3-0 win. John Carroll Women's Soccer was determined to not let that happen again this year.

On Wednesday in Alliance, the Blue Streaks handed Mount Union a 4-3 defeat after losing 3-0 at Mount Union last year.

The Blue Streaks ended their 4-game losing streak to get back to .500 for the year.

In the opening minutes, the Blue Streaks came out firing with a goal from Madyson Rosado in the 5th minute.

All the momentum was on John Carroll's side in the opening minutes, as everything seemed to be going right. Freshman Emily Patrzyk, who just broke the all-time freshman scoring record at John Carroll, tallied on another goal for the Blue Streaks on a penalty kick in the 9th minute.

Two minutes later in the 11th minute, senior Claire Hollern scored to make it 3-0 Blue Streaks only 12 minutes into the game. Madyson Rosado and Meredith Coloian made great efforts for the assists on the goal.

Searching for a goal after her assist on the third goal, Coloian rang a shot off the crossbar in the 18th minute, nearly extending the early Blue streaks lead to four.

The Blue Streaks continued their offensive assault on Mount Union in the first half with a goal from Grace Monnin in the 30th minute to make it 4-0 Blue Streaks. Alli Malinky picked up an assist on the goal.

Mount Union's Andrea Decker changed the momentum with a quick response in the 31st minute with a goal to decrease the lead to three for the Blue Streaks and make the score 4-1.

John Carroll kept applying pressure to finish the half, limiting Mount Union to only 8 shots and 4 on goal. At halftime, the Blue Streaks went into the locker room up 4-1 with 18 shots, 8 on goal. Mount Union finished the half with 8 shots and 4 on goal.

The second half started a bit differently than the first for the Blue Streaks.

Five minutes into the second half, in the 50th minute, the Blue Streaks let an own goal slip by to make it a 2-score game.

The own goal quickly sparked some life in Mount Union, as Andrea Decker came down and scored her second goal of the game in the 55th minute to make it 4-3.

The Blue Streaks' defense stayed steady after the third goal by the Purple Raiders. The Blue Streaks were able to possess the ball in the Moun Union end for most of the late second half.

In the 60th minute, Taylor Wohleber fired a shot that was just saved by the Mount Union goalie.

Then in the 70th minute, the freshman Emily Patrzyk was looking to extend her scoring record when she fired two shots, one saved by Mount Union and the other just high of the net. Patrzyk finished the day with 9 shots on goal to lead the team.

John Carroll kept the ball out of their end in the final minute to hold on to the 4-3 lead in a great OAC victory on the road.

The Blue Streaks won on the stat sheet, as well. John Carroll outshot Mount Union, 25-14, including shots on goal, 11-7.

Mackenzie Stease played 65 minutes in net, making four saves in the victory. Juliana Kontul came in relief to finish the game off.

With the win, the Blue Streaks advanced to 8-8-2 on the year.

John Carroll will now prepare for another OAC foe on Saturday, Muskingum, at Muskingum at 1 pm for their final regular season game of the year. The match will determine seeding for the OAC Tournament, as JCU will look to clinch a spot in the tournament and perhaps a home game in the quarterfinals.
