Football Remains Unbeaten in OAC Play with Win over Muskingum

NEW CONCORD, Ohio -- In the October grind of Ohio Athletic Conference play, you can never get complacent.

John Carroll Football prevented any slipup today, notching a 49-14 victory over Muskingum University on Saturday on the road.

With the win, John Carroll advances to 7-1 on the year, 7-0 in OAC play. The victory sets up what could be in essence an OAC Championship between the only two remaining OAC unbeatens: JCU and Mount Union.

After JCU's opening drive went for naught, the defense stepped up on its second play on the field. Elijah Chungu forced a fumble on a Muskingum completion, and Kiefer Askew ran it back 40 yards to the JCU 45-yard line. At the end of a 9-play drive that followed, JCU converted on a 25-yard Yanni Volas field goal for the 3-0 lead.

The Blue Streaks forced another turnover on Muskingum's next drive, as Chungu did the honors again. Mason Sullivan made the Muskies pay, running in a 6-yard touchdown to push the lead to 10-0 with 5:39 left in the first quarter, and the lead stood entering the second. The JCU defense again shut down Muskingum at the end of a 14-play, 63-yard drive, as Nick Costanzo stuffed a Musky rush on 4th down.

The Muskingum defense then flexed its muscle, picking off a JCU pass. Three 15-yard penalties on JCU set up Muskingum, as the Fighting Muskies got on the board with a 3-yard TD pass with 6:28 left in the quarter. After a quick JCU three-and-out, the Blue Streak defense came into the spotlight again.

On a 3rd and 17 pass, Josh McLean showed off his athleticism by picking off a Muskingum pass and galloping 46 yards to paydirt to up JCU's lead to 17-7. Following a Muskingum punt, Joe Collins guided the offense down the field in the final minute, setting up Volas for a 27-yard field goal. So at halftime, John Carroll stood ahead, 20-7.

Muskingum scuffled on the opening drive of the second half, and JCU took advantage. Demerius Goodwin did much of the work on JCU's drive, and finished things off with a 3-yard touchdown run. A Collins to Brennan Fugh 2-point conversion made it 28-7 JCU. Muskingum kept it close with a 12-play, 75-yard drive ending in a 17-yard score. So entering the final quarter, it was a 14-point ballgame.

But the fourth quarter belonged to JCU.

The Blue Streaks broke the Fighting Muskies' will with a 12-play, 70-yard drive that began in the third quarter and ended with a 4-yard Evan McVay TD with 11:41 on the clock. Ahead 35-14, JCU never looked back. On Muskingum's next drive, a sack by Jake Phillips and a fumble recovery by Ian Thomas switched the field in a hurry.

And so, Joe Collins found his favorite red zone target in Tadas Tatatunas, and the Mentor native put it out of reach with 10:03 left to play after his 6-yard TD. Mason Sullivan later added a short TD run for the final margin of victory.

JCU dominated the ground, outgaining Muskingum 211-38, as well as overall, 381-280. Goodwin led the ground game with 75 yards on 8 carries. Collins completed 17-of-24 passes for 170 yards, completing four passes apiece to Tatarunas, Fugh, and McVay.

On defense, the takeways were critical. Bricker Thiel topped the team with 8 tackles and 2 tackles for loss. Thiel, Phillips, Michael Palmer, and Tyler Thimons all notched sacks. Xavier Andrews also had a nice day with 7 tackles. A total of 20 defensive players had a hand in a tackle.

John Carroll will head to Alliance next Saturday for a 1:30 pm showdown with the Purple Raiders.
