Men's Soccer Flies by Muskies and into the OAC Tournament as #2 Seed

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS -- The John Carroll Men's Soccer team kickstarted the final match of the regular season with a commendable 4-0 victory over Muskingum University.

On Saturday, October 29 the culmination of the scheduled campaign began with the celebration of twelve Blue Streak seniors.

The players that were honored were Dominic Audino, Blake Barna, Mike Burrington, Nicholas Felician, Ian Fields, Tim Flannery, Connor Gynn, Noah Lindon, Gino Romeo, Nicholas Ruggiero, and Brenden Swann.

"This is a very special senior class," said Head Coach Dejan Mladenovic '06. "They've accomplished a lot during their time at John Carroll, and it was nice to get them on the field, a lot of them at the same time, so they could play together for one of our last home games of the season. Guys like Timothy Flannery and Blake Barna stepped up and made an impact tonight."

The energy at Don Shula Stadium was elevated, leading to an early goal.

Around ten minutes into the match, Brendan Swann's laser of a shot ricocheted off the crossbar and Jack Foht was in position to control the rebound and redirect it toward the back of Muskingum's net.

The prompt goal gave the Blue Streaks offensive momentum, leading to a series of scoring opportunities within the first 45 minutes of play.

John Carroll was able to capitalize on said chances, as Brendan Swann added to his own point column with a goal in the 27th minute. Danny Kalic was credited with the assist.

On the counter attack, the Muskies struggled to get the ball in the John Carroll defensive zone. If the Muskingum offense was able to surge forward, the majority of their combinations were intercepted by Blue Streak defenders.

The remainder of the half featured more John Carroll possession, the composed style of play ending in a pristine shot from Blake Barna with just a minute remaining. His goal would be the first of his career.

At the half, the score stood at 3-0, John Carroll with a sound grip on the direction of play.

As the clock began to commence the second half, it was clear that the Blue Streaks would carry a similar intensity in the later portion of the game.

Several John Carroll players earned some pivotal minutes in the match, showcasing their depth and deep-rooted skill.

With 17 minutes remaining, Basheer Alramahi scored his first career goal to put the Blue Streaks up 4-0.

The score would stand at 4-0 as the final minutes ticked off the clock.

The win puts the Blue Streaks at an overall record of 13-4-1, with an OAC record of 8-1.

The playoff picture sets John Carroll at the #2 seed for the postseason. The Blue Streaks will host their opponent in the OAC semifinals on Thursday, November 3.

"The team's mentality is that we have a lot of work to do to prepare for our opponent in the semifinal," said Mladenovic. "Whoever the opponent is will be very deserving. We need to get prepared to take care of business so we can put forth the best performance on the field possible."
