Men's Soccer Stays Flawless in OAC Play, Conquering the Pioneers

MARIETTA, Ohio – While John Carroll Men's Soccer took its lumps against one of the top-five toughest non-conference schedules in the country, the Blue Streaks are off to a perfect start in conference play.

Thus far, the Blue Streaks have played three games. John Carroll is 3-0 vs. Ohio Athletic Conference foes with a +7 goal differential.

Tonight's victory marked the third conquest in a row, as the Blue & Gold rolled past the Pioneers in Marietta, 3-0.

The Blue Streaks fired out strong on the road in the opening minutes. John Carroll gained an early corner kick and got a shot off, but not on net. The Pioneers also tallied a pair of shots, though none on net until the 16th minute. And Jake Vogrin turned away that chance, no problem.

In the 18th minute, the Blue Streaks' work paid off.

John Carroll worked the ball forward quickly, and won a pair of 50/50 balls. Patrick Koenig battled for the ball and got it. The stud striker took a couple touches forward on the right. The Naperville North grad then left-footed a beauty into the right side of the net for the lead.

Despite having the advantage, the Blue Streaks did not rest easy. Hayden Haffener forced Marietta to make a save shortly thereafter. The teams then traded missed shots for a time.

In the 35th minute, Jack Foht tested the Marietta keeper with a shot on net, but the Pioneers stood tall. The Blue Streaks kept up the pressure in the waning moments of the half, though nothing came of the opportunities.

The Blue Streaks stood ahead in both shots (9-5) and shots on goal (3-1) after the opening frame.

The start of the second half was not packed on the play-by-play stats, but was not without action. The Blue Streaks pressured the Pioneers, but the hosts did the right things. In the 59th minute, the Pioneers slotted a couple shots on net, which Vogrin stoned cold.

In the 62nd minute, the Blue Streaks put the coaches' and fans' minds at ease with an insurance tally. Nicholas Ruggiero charged forward and got a centering pass. He turned the attention away from himself for a moment with a pass to the right to Ben Brucken. Brucken quickly slotted it back to Ruggiero, and the stalwart hit a marvelous left-footed shot into the left corner of the net just past the keeper.

With the multi-goal advantage, the Blue Streaks looked to stay tidy on the back-end. Vogrin made a save in the 76th minute, but other than that, the visitors kept the Pioneers out of the danger zone.

And in the 86th minute, the Blue Streaks scored a third goal to hit the max goal differential for conference standings. Brenden Swann scored on a nice free kick from far out, finding the lower left corner for the final clincher.

With the 3-0 conquest, the Blue Streaks advance to 8-3-1 overall, and stand alone atop the OAC standings. Of course, six games still remain in league play, but it is a strong start indeed.

The next challenge is Baldwin Wallace. The Yellow Jackets always play JCU tough, so the men of Dejan Mladenovic will look to fire out to a strong start on Wednesday at Don Shula Stadium.
