Men's Basketball Completes Kaulig Companies Tip-Off Classic with a Victory

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS -- On the final day of The Kaulig Companies Tip-Off Classic, John Carroll's Men's Basketball team was tasked with facing off with Ohio Wesleyan University in an exciting matchup at Mike Moran Gymnasium.

The Blue Streaks earned a victory in a fast-paced affair with a 70-55 conquest of the Battling Bishops.

John Carroll moved to 2-0 with the pair of victories in the Kaulig Companies Tip-Off Classic.

The Blue Streaks started strong, winning the tip and scoring quickly. Luke Chicone scored first after putting a nice move on an OWU defender. A series of Ohio Wesleyan buckets put them up 5-2 early, before John Carroll's signature full-court press took over. Two quick turnovers put the Blue Streaks up, highlighted by a break away dunk by Luke Frazier

For the rest of the first half, the teams would trade blows with twelve total lead changes. John Carroll headed into half leading 33-25, with the difference maker being their press defense. The Blue Streaks scored 10 points off turnovers in the first half. Luke Chicone, Jerry Higgins, and Will Yontek led the Blue Streaks in points with six apiece. For Ohio Wesleyan, Jack Clement led the way with nine points in the first half.

John Carroll came out of the half aggressive, scoring three quick buckets, making the score 40-25. The Blue Streaks never looked back.

Timely shots and aggressive defense as part of the five-in, five-out platoon system paid off well, as the Blue Streaks never let the Battling Bishops back into the contest.

Leading the way in points for John Carroll was sophomore Will Yontek (14). In the effort, Luka Eller grabbed ten rebounds and Henry Raynor helped out with six.

Graduate transfer Jerry Higgins III was awarded with Tournament MVP with his efforts in both games. In the first game against Wittenberg, Higgins scored 17 points while also securing 3 rebounds. In the game against Ohio Wesleyan, Higgins added 11 points and 3 steals.

The defense for the Blue Streaks was something Higgins put emphasis on.

"The chemistry with this team will come, but with us being such a strong defensive team along with how we are offensively it's going to be a fun season," said Higgins.

John Carroll's next game comes on the road in Wheaton, Illinois in the Wheaton Tournament. As part of the tourney, the Blue Streaks will take on the University of Wisconsin- River Falls at 5 pm next Friday.
