Women's Soccer Bows Out in OAC Tournament Semifinal at Capital

BEXLEY, Ohio – John Carroll Women's Soccer traveled down to Bexley for the Ohio Athletic Conference Tournament Semifinal on Thursday hot off the heels of a convincing 3-1 win over the University of Mount Union in the quarterfinals.

Unfortunately, the strong momentum was not enough to knock off the Capital Comets at home.

The Comets rolled ahead into the OAC Tournament Championship with a 3-0 win on Thursday.

Capital entered the OAC Tournament as the #1 seed after a 11-2-3 regular season, including a 7-0-2 conference record. One of those conference wins was a 3-0 shutout of the Blue Streaks back on October 22. The Comets outshot the Blue Streaks 21-13 in that match, but the real difference maker was Avery Hart. The star netted three goals in the 12th, 56th, and 89th minutes of the match. After scoring again on Thursday, the senior forward now has a team-high 12 goals.

The Blue Streaks needed to play a near perfect game to have a chance to win. Things did not start well on that front.

John Carroll came out slow and Capital took full advantage of their early opportunities. The Comets attacked the Blue Streaks right out of the gate and tallied two shots in the second minute.

The Comets finally managed to sneak one inside the woodwork in the third minute. Madeline Woodruff booted a corner kick right into the box that was immediately headed into the net by junior midfielder Sophia Leonetti.

After the quick goal scored by the Comets, the Blue Streaks settled in on defense. While they were still outshot 17-4 in the first half, the Juliana Kontul and the Blue Streaks shut out the #1 seed in the OAC for the remainder of the first half.

The best scoring opportunities for the Blue Streaks came in the 43rd and 44th minutes. First, a shot by Emily Patrzyk directed towards the bottom left corner of the net was saved by Capital goalkeeper Lauren White.

Then less than a minute later, the Blue Streaks had another scoring opportunity fall by the wayside as Gianna Merlo saw her shot miss high and left of the goal.

The second 45 minutes were a defensive battle on both sides. Neither side was able to find the back of the net until two late goals were scored by Lizzie Elliot and Avery Hart in the 86th and 90th minutes, respectively.

This loss marks the second time in the the past four seasons that John Carroll has bowed out in the OAC Semifinal.

The Blue Streaks will finish the 2022 campaign with a 10-9-2 record and were 5-4 in conference play.

With plenty of youth returning especially with goal-scoring, the future is bright for JCU Women's Soccer moving forward.
