Men's Basketball Loses a Nailbiter vs. Student Princes at Home

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio -- On the eve of a large impending winter storm, John Carroll Men's Basketball faced off against Heidelberg at the Tony DeCarlo Varsity Center on Tuesday.

The game was originally scheduled for Wednesday night, but was pushed a day ahead due to the approaching winter weather. The Blue Streaks, having lost their two previous games, looked to bounce back against a team near the top of the Ohio Athletic Conference standings.

The game ended with a final score of 76-74, with Heidelberg overcoming John Carroll in a hard-fought battle.

In the first half, the Student Princes started off strong, continuing to drive to the basket. The scoring was back and forth, with both teams trading baskets for the first five minutes. Heidelberg then went on a run, starting with the first three-pointer of the game and then a three-point play that came off a foul on a fast break, making the score 14-8 Heidelberg. The Blue Streaks countered quickly to regain the lead with a three from Omar Abuhamdeh and a layup from Jackson Sartain, bringing the score to 14-13.

Halfway through the first half, John Carroll was able to pull away a bit with back-to-back three pointers to push the score to 21-16. The game then turned into a defensive battle. After multiple turnovers and strong defensive play from both sides, the Blue Streaks were able to rev up the offense, driving to the hoop and moving the ball. The Blue Streaks increased their lead to 34-24.

In the last minute and a half, Heidelberg was able to get a few shots to fall, cutting down the John Carroll lead. However the Blue Streaks headed into the locker room maintaining a 5-point lead, 36-31.

The second half continued to be a defensive battle. Both teams went back to trading baskets. David Gentry had back-to-back-to-back baskets, bringing his point total to 14 and increasing the John Carroll lead to 44-38. However, Heidelberg would not go quietly. The Student Princes managed to get the game within one point with 14 minutes left in the game.

After a timeout was called by Head Coach Pete Moran, Eric Hanna came out and hit back to back three-pointers, helping to increase the Blue Streaks' lead to 54-47.

Heidelberg once again brought the game a bit closer, tying the game at 60 points with only eight minutes left.

From there on, the scoring was back and forth, like it had been all game. The Student Princes pushed the pace of the game and got shots to fall, sneaking ahead, 67-62.

With two minutes left, the Blue Streaks cut the lead to one point, 72-71. After a pair of free throws by the Student Princes, Eric Hanna hit a clutch three-pointer to knot the game at 74. Heidelberg tabbed a pair of free throws to move ahead, 76-74.

With eight seconds left in the game, after a pair of timeouts, John Carroll got possession with a chance to win. The Blue Streaks got the ball to Eric Hanna, who had been sharp behind the line all night. Unfortunately, his three-ball attempt was just a bit off the mark, allowing the Student Princes to walk away with the victory.

Eric Hanna led John Carroll in points on the night with 23, a new career-high.

"It was pretty good. To be honest, I didn't even realize it," said Hanna. "If it wasn't for teamwork, I wouldn't be able to produce 23 points. I thank my teammates and my coaches for helping me get there."

Freshman David Gentry added 18 points and 7 rebounds to the loss.

The Blue Streaks fall to an overall record of 7-10, 2-8 in the OAC.

With only five games left before OAC Tournament, John Carroll will travel to Marietta face off against the Pioneers on Saturday, February 5 at 4 pm.
