Distance Stars Shine in 5k at GVSU's Big Meet

John Carroll's record books weren't broken in Michigan, but the pages bent.
ALLENDALE, Mich. -- Over 1,800 athletes traveled to Michigan for the Grand Valley State Big Meet on Friday, with competitors from all across the country, from Alaska to North Dakota to Ohio, and everywhere in between.

Amongst the racers were a contingent of distance runners for John Carroll University.

The Blue Streaks thrived in the 5000m on both the Men's and the Women's sides. Records were not broken, but second-place times were had. Cameron Bujaucius starred for JCU Women's Track & Field, while Jamie Dailey stole the show for the JCU men. Both times now stand second in school history.

Bujaucius enjoyed a marvelous day in the 5k. Her time of 17:28.06 placed her fourth in a field of 32 finishers. The Hudson native was only beat out by Division I runners from Illinois State, Purdue Fort Wayne, and North Dakota. It was a great day for the senior.

Dailey stood out for the Blue Streaks in a big way in the men's race. His time of 14:18.98 is now the second-fastest in the program's illustrious record books. It was also a personal best for the fifth-year stud. That also sets him in the top five in NCAA Division III.

Jared Arnold continued his excellent season, bursting forth for a time of 14:30.32. Before Dailey's heroics, Arnold's time was the second-best in program history. Barrett Scheatzle showed why he's a rising star with a time of 14:48.15. That's the fastest freshman tally in program history.

Andrew Miner deserves a heaping of kudos as well. The graduate student tallied a time of 15:01.52. That's a new PR for the veteran, a great showing for him.

Erica Esper thrived for Blue & Gold, to the tune of a personal-best effort in the women's 5k. Her time of 17:55.55 is an indoor PR for the junior. The Independence native is a star to watch the rest of the season.
