Men's Lacrosse Breezes Past Wooster to Open 2022 Campaign

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio -- The defending OAC Champions dominated in a cold and snowy 2022 spring home opener in a non-conference matchup against The College of Wooster.

The Blue Streaks roared to a 21-4 victory over the Fighting Scots on Wednesday evening at Don Shula Stadium.

"We have been playing together for almost three years now," said Brendan Hein. "We've spent a lot of time together and know each other well. It's easy to have chemistry through practice and everything, so we know where to be, and we communicate very well."

Within the first minute of the season, the Blue Streaks started hot with a goal by Morgan Morrell. At the 11:33 mark in the first,  Carter Pavain gave the Blue Streaks a 2-0 lead. Wooster answered with a goal of their own by Vinny Dileo to cut the Blue Streaks' lead to one midway through the first quarter. John Carroll ended the first period on a 2-0 run to go up 4-1, with Morgan Morrell adding his second goal of the night with a Kevin Hack assist, and Matt Berdysiak with a helper by the all-time assist leader in school history, Brendan Whitty.

The Blue Streaks continued the attack in the second quarter with 20 total shots, 12 on goal, totaling 11 goals in the quarter. JCU received three goals from Matt Berdysiak and two goals apiece from Morrell, Hack, and Jared Gorenflo. The Blue Streaks defense was on complete lockdown, holding Wooster to zero shots on goal and causing seven turnovers. The Blue Streaks took a 15-1 lead into the break.

After halftime, the Blue Streaks kept up the pressure on the Fighting Scots. John Carroll scored five times through the third quarter, including two more goals by Berdysiak, adding to his total of six on the night. Johnny Wilson III replaced Jon Gaglio with 9:46 remaining in the third, and played well in relief. The Fighting Scots finally got on the board again with a goal by Vinny Dielo at the 5-minute mark for his second goal of the game. The Fighting Scots added another goal late in the third period by Charlie Ballou, his first on the season. The Blue Streaks led 20-3 heading into the final quarter.

The Fighting Scots got an early fourth-quarter goal by Dielo to give him a hat trick for the game. Capping the night for the Blue Streaks was Reed Stuhlreyer's second of the night, on an assist by Berdysiak late in the fourth quarter to make it 21-4.

The Blue Streaks outshot the Fighting Scots 47-26, caused 21 Wooster turnovers, and were 12-of-15 on clears. JCU also collected 26 ground balls. The Blue Streaks won the faceoff battle, 16-13.

"Cam Cecere did an awesome job today," said Hein. "We battled for ground balls and did well, Carter Pavain and Kevin Hack did an excellent job on the wings. We all just kind of piled in and got the job done."

"Our defense has been pretty solid, we are a very close group from the number one guy to the last guy," added junior defender Conor Ryan. "Communication is our number one thing. We know each other like the back of our hand. It was an all-around great effort. The bench had great energy. Gaglio and Johnny played well, too. We're very proud of the all-around good effort."

The Blue Streaks will travel on the road next Wednesday March 2nd at Wittenberg University at 7 pm.
