Softball Stumbles in Doubleheader to Conclude Florida Trip at .500

CLERMONT, Fla. -- After winning three straight thanks to team efforts, John Carroll Softball struggled in the closing games of the 2022 Spring Games.

The Blue Streaks dropped two games on Friday. JCU lost a 4-2 ballgame to Saint Mary's College (IN) and then dropped a 5-1 defeat to Johnson & Wales University at Hancock Park.

With the defeats, John Carroll drops to .500, carrying a 4-4 mark back home from Florida.

Game 1
The game started quickly, as each team managed a single in the first, including a Crista Nativio basehit. John Carroll then threatened in the second with runners on the corners and one out, but Saint Mary's avoided any issues.

The Belles got on the board first in the third. The visitors got a single to open the frame, and after a groundout, McKenna Shoupe rocketed a shot over the fence in right center. Just like that, the Belles stood in front, 2-0.

John Carroll tallied its first run in the fourth. Serena Paterno clubbed a 1-out double to center to start things. Gabby Hougan quickly clipped a single to right field, scoring Paterno. Sensing danger, the Belles moved to the bullpen, and escaped the jam with the lead intact.

After Katie DeBord snuck out of a jam in the top of the top of the sixth, JCU tied things up in the bottom of the frame. Gracie Bressoud's inning-opening single got the Blue Streaks buzzing. A Kasyn Scarantine single and a Kristen Jesberger walk loaded the bases. In stepped Alyssia Carmichael to do a job. The youngster sailed a sacrifice fly to center, scoring Bressoud. Unfortunately, the fun ended there, and the game stood tied at two apiece.

A two-out rally in the seventh won the game for the Belles. A single and a walk set the stage for a 2-run double by Rylee Hershberger. And just like that, the Blue Streaks trailed by a couple entering the bottom of the seventh.

Backs against the wall, JCU battled. Jesberger jousted a 1-out single and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Lexie Genovese then entered as a pinch runner. Saint Mary's got a strikeout, but then Paterno managed a single up the middle. Genovese dashed for home, but the throw beat her, and the Belles got their first win of the year.

DeBord accepted the loss after a solid effort. At the dish, three Blue Streaks enjoyed multi-hit days: Nativio (2-for-4), Scarantine (2-for-4), and Paterno (2-for-4). John Carroll had more hits than Saint Mary's (10-7), but the Blue Streaks couldn't take advantage of a couple promising opportunities as much as they would have liked.

Game 2
John Carroll took advantage of an early Johnson & Wales error to grab a quick lead. Gracie Bressoud and Mallory Stonebraker tallied singles in the first to help rev JCU's offense to a 1-0 lead,

Johnson & Wales responded in the second inning, but did not score as many runs as it looked like they might. After leaving two runners stranded in the first, the Wildcats left runs on the table in the second. Johnson & Wales managed to load the bases with no outs, but then Brianna Callow worked some magic.

First, the freshman garnered a strikeout. Then, she got an infield fly. A Wildcat managed to scatter home on the deep popout, but the Blue Streaks caught a JWU runner being too aggressive, getting the third out. So, the score stood deadlocked at 1-1 after two.

The Wildcats earned the go-ahead run in the third. A double and a stolen base set a runner on third for a JWU sac fly, pushing the Wildcats in front, 2-1.

After a precipitous start, the pitchers settled in. Callow and JWU's Sage Borkowski found grooves and started tearing through the orders. That is, until the Wildcats started the fifth with a deep double to left center. A single and a stolen base set two runners in scoring position, and a JWU double brought both home. Entering the sixth, JCU trailed, 4-1.

The Wildcats padded the lead with another run in the bottom of the sixth, tacking on one last run.

Callow accepted the loss for JCU. The Blue Streaks' offense was held to 3 hits in the defeat.

The Blue Streaks will now regroup and reset for the first games back in Cleveland in late March vs. Case Western Reserve.
