Baseball Splits With Mary Washington To End Virginia Trip

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. -- Coming off of a win on Friday over Mary Washington, the John Carroll baseball team saw mixed results in an afternoon doubleheader against the Eagles.

In game one, the Blue Streaks relied on their offense to erase a 4-1 deficit and eke out a 7-6 win in the seven-inning game. In the backend of the doubleheader, JCU could not stop the Eagles in nine innings, losing the second game, 8-6.

Game One
Despite a slow start, the Blue Streaks pulled out a win in game one. The first two innings were calm for the team, with no errors and only one runner left on base.

An error by the Eagles scored Matthew Springer to put JCU on the board for the first time in the top of the third inning.

The Eagles took the lead in the bottom of the fifth and sixth innings, making the score 4-1.

In the seventh inning, John Carroll's bats came alive.

An error with two men on and one out helped Joe Olsavsky reach first. A single from the next batter Benjamin Surman brought in two runs to make the score 4-3. Two batters later, Victor Glaser had his own two RBI single to give the Blue Streaks a 5-4 advantage.

Singles from Jared Orwell and Sean Connolly added to the Blue and Gold's runs, making the score 7-4.

The Eagles started the bottom of the seventh off with a bang as they loaded the bases with no outs.  However, JCU's Sylvan Wiley relieved Jon Gavric and forced a double play ball to limit the damage to just one run as Mary Washington crept back to make it 7-5.

Despite the Eagles scoring on a balk during the next at bat, Wiley forced a flyout to seal the victory in game one.

Game Two
After scoring six runs at the end of the first game, John Carroll continued some of that momentum into game two with a Luke Galioto single and a Jared Orwell sacrifice fly to take an early 2-0 lead in the first.

The Eagles then scored three unanswered runs in the next three innings to take a 3-2 advantage at the end of the third.

In the fourth, Henry Haracz hit an RBI single to tie the game up at 3-3 but Mary Washington responded with three runs in the bottom of the inning to regain the lead, 6-3.

The Blue Streaks then scored three straight runs themselves in the sixth on an error and a two RBI single from Olsavsky to tie it up at 6-6.

Defensive miscues by JCU in the seventh caused Mary Washington to score their final two runs of the game, both on errors.

John Carroll could not capitalize in the next two innings as the Eagles retired all six Blue Streak batters to end game two.

The Blue Streaks will return to University Heights to play their first home contest of the season on Tuesday, March 22 against Oberlin. First pitch is scheduled for 4:00pm.
