Baseball Splits with Muskingum to Open OAC Play

NEW CONCORD, Ohio -- Coming off two wins vs Oberlin last week, the Blue Streaks traveled to New Concord, Ohio to take on the Muskingum Fighting Muskies in an afternoon doubleheader.

In Game 1, the Blue Streaks relied on some timely offense, scoring four runs in the ninth to pick up the 7-5 win. In Game 2, the Muskies rallied back to defeat the Blue Streaks in a high-scoring affair, beating the Blue Streaks, 12-8.

Game 1
Both offenses started slowly, with only one hit through three innings before catcher Landen Glaser hit a double in the top of the fourth inning and came around to score on a Bennett Cavaretta RBI groundout to make the game 1-0.

Blue Streaks starting pitcher Mitchell Midea looked dominant early on, taking a no-hitter into the sixth inning, looking impressive all the way. Midea eventually surrendered some hits, allowing three runs to give the Muskies a 3-1 lead.

The Blue Streaks quickly answered the bell for Midea in the seventh inning. Two fielding errors by the Muskies put Ben Surman in position to hit a two-run RBI single up the middle to tie the game at 3-3.

The Muskies then had their own answer in the bottom of the eighth, as they hit a two-run homer to regain a 5-3 lead and end Midea's day, who struck out 11 batters over 7 ⅓ innings, yielding 4 hits and 5 earned runs. Freshman Owen Gerba relieved Midea to work out of the jam in the eighth inning.

John Carroll did not give up and would quickly load the bases in the top of the ninth after back-to-back singles from Luke Chlystek and Henry Haracz, and Joe Olsavsky, who was hit by a pitch. After Surman drew a walk with the bases loaded to score a run, Luke Galioto hit a double to center field to score two and re-take the lead. Glaser soon added an RBI sacrifice fly to extend the Blue Streaks lead to 7-5.

Andrew Steele came in to close the door on the Muskies and had a 1-2-3 9th inning to pick up his first save of the season and secure the win. Owen Gerba (1-1) picked up his first career win for the Blue Streaks for his relief efforts.

Haracz paced the Streaks offense going 3-for-4 at the dish scoring two runs. Surman went 1-for-3, adding 3 RBI and scoring a run.

Game 2
The second game of this Tuesday's doubleheader started fast, as the Muskies took a quick 1-0 lead after hitting a leadoff solo home run off of Blue Streaks starter Matthew Aukerman in the bottom of the first.

In the top of the second inning, the Blue Streaks answered after catcher Logan LaMere started the inning off with a double down the right field line. Third baseman Connor Mayle then drew a walk before centerfielder Matthew Springer hit an RBI single to score Lamere. Shortstop Joe Olsvasky would then hit an RBI groundout to score Mayle and make it a 2-1 ballgame.

In the third, Aukerman would allow his second homer of the game, this time being a 2-run shot to make the score 3-2.

The top of the fourth saw the Blue Streaks add a run on a Henry Haracz RBI groundout, allowing Mayle to score, who reached on a walk earlier in the inning.

The Muskies continued their offensive assault in the fourth inning by adding 4 more runs, three of them on another dinger that made the game 7-3.

OAC pitcher of the week Sylvan Wiley came in to relieve Aukerman in the fifth. The Blue Streaks' stud went 4 innings, but could not end the Muskies' offensive onslaught.

The top of the eighth inning was a big one for the Blue Streaks. Luke Chlystek got the inning started by drawing a walk. Senior Landen Glaser then ripped a double into left center allowing Michael Persichetti, pinchrunning for Chlystek, to score. Cavaretta would then add his own RBI double, scoring Glaser. Lamere plated Cavaretta next on an RBI groundout. Henry Haracz then hit the third RBI double of the inning to cut the Muskies lead to 8-7.

Just when the Blue Streaks thought they had gained the momentum in the game, the Muskies answered with their own big inning in the bottom half of the eighth. Muskingum pushed the lead to 12-7.

The Blue Streaks couldn't muster a comeback in the ninth inning after bringing the tying run to plate with the bases loaded. Muskingum garnered a strikeout to end the game.

The Blue Streaks move to 7-10 on the season with the split.

Glaser went 3-for-5 with an RBI in the losing effort. Additionally, Lamere went 2-for-5 with 2 RBIs in the game. Matthew Aukerman picked up the loss, moving to 1-1 on the season.

John Carroll will host their first home games of the year against the Wilmington Fightin' Quakers on Saturday.
