Softball Scores Sweep, as Scarantine Sets HBP Record Against Bethany

BETHANY, W.V. -- The John Carroll University Softball team completed a midweek sweep during a doubleheader at Bethany College.

John Carroll earned the win in Game 1, 4-3, with a major comeback win. The Blue Streaks roared in Game 2, rolling to an 11-3 conquest.

With the wins, John Carroll improves to 7-5-1 on the season in non-conference play.

Game 1
John Carroll mounted a comeback despite trailing 3-0 after the third inning in the opener. John Carroll defeated the Bison, 4-3, in the afternoon's first game.

John Carroll's bats began to heat up in the top of the fifth as they began to mount their comeback. John Carroll recorded four runs and four hits in the top of the fifth.

Kendall Trunzo began the hot streak via a single into left field. In the next at bat, Crista Nativio followed Trunzo's lead, as she hit a single to right field. After a fortunate error from the Bison, Kasyn Scarantine loaded the bases for the Blue & Gold, providing them with an ample opportunity for a comeback.

Mallory Stonebraker brought in Trunzo after walking. Gabby Hougan recorded two RBIs in the following at-bat, as Scarantine and Nativio rounded home, resulting in the game being tied 3-3.

Maddie Traub then hit a double, with Orendi scoring, giving the Blue & Gold a 4-3 lead.

Both offenses went quiet for the remainder of the game, as no other runs were scored.

Danielle Orendi finished the game with four strikeouts. Orendi improved her season record to 3-1 with her effort in the circle.

Game 2
Building on the momentum from their first victory, the Blue & Gold got off to a fast start in the top of the second inning.

John Carroll scored the game's first run as Jess Lichota brought home Lexie Genovese. Moments later, Nativio recorded an RBI as Lichota crossed home plate.

Nativio advanced to second after stealing the base. During the next at bat, Scarantine made history. The senior became the program's all-time record leader for hit by pitches, surpassing Mackenzie Griffin.

On a fielder's choice, Carmichael recorded an RBI, bringing home Trunzo, pushing John Carroll up 3-0.

John Carroll began to put the game away in the top of the third as they notched a 4-run inning.

The offensive explosion started as a double from Lichota brought home Hougan and Kristen Jesberger, pushing the Blue Streaks ahead 5-0. Nativio's stellar day continued as she recorded a triple, bringing home Lichota, earning Nativio her second RBI of the game. The lead continued to grow, as Nativio would score via Scaratine, who reached base via an error. The Blue & Gold finished the third inning leading 7-0.

Bethany found themselves on the scoreboard for the first time in the second game at the bottom of the fourth. Bethany's three hits resulted in three runs, cutting John Carroll's lead to 7-4.

John Carroll sealed the deal in the fifth and final inning, as the visitors recorded another 4-run inning.

Nativio led the team in the inning, as she recorded her third RBI and a second steal of the day. Carmichael earned two more RBIs and Jesberger recorded one as well, resulting in an 11-3 lead.

John Carroll closed out the game with an 11-3 victory after five complete innings of play.
