Men's Lacrosse Utilizes Outstanding Defense to Defeat Aurora at Home

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio -- John Carroll Men's Lacrosse has proven once again to be a force to be reckoned with at the start of their 2022 season campaign.

The Blue Streaks notched another game to the win column, defeating Aurora University by a final score of 15-4 on Saturday at Don Shula Stadium.

In their previous contest, John Carroll beat the Wittenberg Tigers by a score of 21-16 this past Wednesday, March 2 on the road. Today, JCU's offense stayed hot, but the defense was otherworldly, helping JCU advance to 3-0 on the year.

Aurora took the early lead at the start of the first quarter with a goal scored at the 10:12 mark, but the Blue Streaks would pile it on after that. Leading the charge for the Blue Streaks was midfielder Kevin Hack, who has had an explosive start to the 2022 season. The veteran scored three goals for the team and recorded 11 shots, both team highs.

John Carroll stood ahead after the first quarter, 3-1. But it was a dominant second quarter that put the Blue Streaks ahead for good.

Hack, Jared Gorenflo, Matt Berdysiak, and Tanner Gill-Snow all found the back of the net in the second quarter. Meanwhile, the JCU defense stood tall, keeping the visitors off the board.

After taking a 7-1 lead into the break, the Blue Streaks kept things rolling to start the third. Hack and Brendan Whitty found twine to stretch the lead to 9-1 with 12:34 left in the third. Aurora finally got a goal at 11:09. But this game belonged to JCU.

Midfielder Ian Flynn would tack on two goals and assists to boost the Blue Streaks. John Carroll controlled the game after three with a 12-2 lead.

Morgan Morrell, Cullen Zarek, and Gorenflo iced the game with goals in the fourth, setting the final margin at 15-4.

Whitty would get his share of the ball over the course of the day, recording two goals and three assists continuing his great start to the season. The line consisting of Gorenflo, Morrell, and Berdysiak would carry that competitive edge, as they each recorded two goals. Goalkeeper Jon Gaglio made some huge contributions to the win for the Blue Streaks, recording 12 saves. He looked dynamic in net and played a key role in helping JCU thrive on clears (31-of-39).

Sam Rodgers played an excellent game on defense, with 3 caused turnovers. Cam Cecere won 13-of-20 faceoffs and tallied a team-high 8 groundballs.

The Blue Streaks will look to continue their winning ways as they go back on the road to face off against Grove City College in Grove City, Pennsylvania on Wednesday, March 9. The game will start at 7 pm.
