John Carroll Cools Off in Florida as they Drop Two to RIT

DAVENPORT, Fla. -- The John Carroll baseball team took a hard fall at Northeast Regional Park in Davenport as they lost both seven inning games to RIT, 10-5 and 5-3 respectfully.

JCU jumped out early in game one as Victor Glaser hit a two RBI double with two outs in the first inning to take a 2-0 lead.

However, RIT stormed back as they scored on an error, RBI single, and a walk with the bases loaded to step in front 3-2.  Blue Streak starter Jon Ambro was yanked from the game after the walk just 0.1 innings in.

Sylvan Wiley stepped in for Ambro and gave up a sacrifice fly to the next batter that scored two more, which increased the Tiger advantage 5-2.

John Carroll did get another chance to do some damage in the second as the first two batters Erik Daugenti and Michael Persichetti reached on a walk and double, respectfully.  However, both runners were tagged out on the next at bat on a double play as they attempted to retreat back to their bags on what was a chopper to first base.  Henry Haracz then proceeded to strike out to end the threat for JCU.

The Tigers tacked on another run in the second on a Wiley error to bring the score to 6-2 and then added two more in the third on an RBI single and wild pitch.

RIT continued to pound in the fourth as they scored two more to make it 10-2.

John Carroll attempted a rally in the sixth as the first two batters reached on a single and double.  Then, pinch hitter Bennett Cavaretta reached on an error which scored Luke Galioto from third to close the gap to seven runs.  After a Persichetti strikeout, Ben Surman continued his dominant Florida trip with an RBI single to make it 10-4 before JCU flamed out with two consecutive groundouts.

With two outs in the seventh, Galioto hit a solo home run to left field but it proved too little too late as the Blue Streaks dropped their second game in the sunshine state.

Despite the loss, JCU outhit the Tigers 10-9 while both teams committed two errors.

Game two started very similarly to game one for John Carroll with two runs in the first inning on a Joe Olsavsky single and Haracz triple to take the early lead.

In the third, with the bases loaded and one out, John Gavric relieved Blue Streak starter Duncan Cappar who then gave up a run on a fielder's choice to make it 2-1.  The next batter tied the game up on a rundown at first base as the runner on third scored.

Ian Libby broke through in the fourth for the Tigers as he hit a two run single to push the RIT lead to 4-2.  Two innings later, they scored again on a sacrifice fly to make it 5-2.

John Carroll tried a last-ditch effort in the seventh as pinch hitter Cavaretta and Surman each had singles to lead off the inning.  A Galioto sacrifice fly sent pinch runner Ryan Funderburg home to make it 5-3, and with runners on the corners and two outs Logan LaMere struck out to seal the sweep for RIT.

The Blue Streaks used six different pitchers who combined for nine strikeouts and only four hits allowed, but walked eight Tiger batters.  JCU outhit RIT again, as they managed seven.

John Carroll will get two days off before facing Albion on Thursday, March 10 for a doubleheader back at Lake Myrtle Park in Auburndale.  First pitch is scheduled for 3:00pm.
