Women's Lacrosse Drops Opening Florida Game to Westfield State

CLEARWATER, Fla. -- Under a cloudy Wednesday morning sky, John Carroll Women's Lacrosse opened its two-game Florida trip against Westfield State University.

Before the game could begin, the scoreboard clock at the Joe DiMaggio Sports Complex first had to be made operational. The technical issues with the scoreboard caused the game to be delayed by about an hour.

When the game commenced, the Blue Streaks fought hard, but dropped a 13-11 loss to Westfield State (MA), 13-11.

The Blue Streaks got on the board first, opening the game with a Lainey Donalson goal at 13:44 off an Jenna Ginsberg assist. Ginsberg kept things rolling with an unassisted goal at 5:58. But the rest of the quarter belonged to Westfield State.

The squad from Massachusetts tallied the final three goals of the stanza, pushing ahead 3-2 entering the second quarter.

Donalson got the game back to square one at 3-3. The Blue Streaks had too much aggression on defense following Donalson's second goal. The Owls struck for a pair of free position shots within the span of a minute, soaring ahead 6-4. Ginsberg responded with a pair of goals, evening things at six. But the Owls got the final goal of the half, taking a 7-6 lead into the break.

After halftime, the Owls kept the momentum, netting a pair of critical goals to push farther ahead, 9-6, at the 12:22 mark. A couple minutes later, Alex Heishman found twine, but the Owls immediately answered. Heishman and Shannon Burdick got the offense revved up in the final couple minutes of the half, slimming the margin to 10-9 entering the fourth.

John Carroll and Westfield State traded goals in the fourth, as JCU couldn't tie the game. Burdick and Caylin Perryman tallied goals, and the Blue Streaks trailed by just 12-11 with 6:55 to play.

Just 54 seconds later, the Owls struck again, pushing forward to 13-11. Neither team would manage another goal.

Due to tough fouls and a yellow card, the Blue Streaks couldn't get the game to even. It was a physical game, and the Owls managed to take advantage of free-position goals, going 4-for-6, while JCU only scored on 1-of-4 FP shot attempts.

John Carroll drops to 0-3 with the loss. The Blue Streaks will face Western Connecticut State on Saturday morning to wrap up the team's Florida adventure.
