JCU Softball Splits with BW on Strike Out Cancer Games Honoring the Loudins

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio -- The bats, the balls, and the bases were in place at Bracken Field.

But as first pitch approached, two familiar faces were missing: Dr. Maureen Loudin and David Loudin.

Before the 2022 season, the parents of JCU's head softball coach, Nicole Loudin, passed following battles with cancer. And so on a special Strike Out Cancer Day at Bracken Field on Tuesday, the Blue Streaks commemorated their lives.

Before the games vs. Baldwin Wallace, the Loudin family embraced on the mound. In a moment of joy, Mike Loudin hefted a first pitch strike, and a large round of applause was had in memory of Dr. Maureen and David Loudin.

In a family of split allegiances (Dr. Maureen Loudin spent 20+ years as an educator at BW), it seemed only fitting for the Blue Streaks and Yellow Jackets to split.

Baldwin Wallace fired out for a 7-0 win in Game 1, before John Carroll outlasted the Yellow Jackets in Game 2, 4-3.

Game 1
The opening few frames flew by, as a pitchers' duel developed between BW's Nikki Camarati and JCU's Danielle Orendi.

The two pitchers traded scoreless sides before the Yellow Jackets got on board with an RBI single in the third. Orendi got through a quick fourth before the Yellow Jackets finally solved her in the fifth.

The visitors plated six runs in a high-powered fifth frame, highlighted by a grand slam and a 2-run dinger for the Yellow Jackets. The 7-0 lead was plenty for Camarati.

The reigning OAC Pitcher of the Year and Pitcher of the Week cruised in the circle. In fact, she stood perfect through 6.1 innings. Camarati crunched 9 strikeouts to open the game, striking out the side three times in a row.

The perfect game was at last broken in the seventh, as Scarantine sent a single to the outfield to end Camarati's dream game. Scarantine advanced to second on a wild pitch, and the Yellow Jackets called to the bullpen. Two quick outs later, and BW walked away with the win. Camarati ended with 16 strikeouts.

Orendi accepted the loss, but did have 5 strikeouts. Katie DeBord worked two scoreless innings.

Game 2
Camarati opened the second game, but only stayed in an inning until BW made a change.

In the meanwhile, the Yellow Jackets got out in front with a run in the first inning and a couple more in the second. But that would be all Brianna Callow would allow.

As Callow settled in, the John Carroll bats came alive in the fourth inning. Back-to-back singles by Gabby Hougan and Lexie Genovese plus a Kaylyn Odelli walk loaded the bases. BW got one out, but Crista Nativio clubbed a single to left to plate Hougan and Genovese, JCU's first two runs of the day.

After Callow cruised in the top of the fifth, the Blue Streaks stretched ahead for the first time all day. Singles by Kristen Jesberger and Hougan set runners on the corners with no outs. Genovese tabbed a single to center to score Jesberger and knot the game at three apiece.

Baldwin Wallace called to the bullpen, but the move didn't pay dividends. A wild pitch followed by a critical error allowed Hougan to scoot home. And just like that, the Blue Streaks held a precipitous 4-3 lead.

And so entered Katie DeBord to close things out. In the sixth, the junior from Mason cut through the Yellow Jackets in quick succession. The seventh was much more nerve-wracking.

The Yellow Jackets got two quick runners aboard via a single and an error. A sacrifice bunt put two runners in scoring position with just one out. But DeBord stayed the course, garnering a couple of clutch popouts, earning the first save of her career.

Callow improved to 4-3 with the win. Hougan enjoyed a delightful day at the dish, hitting 3-for-4 with 2 runs. Both teams tallied 8 hits, but BW's untimely error proved to be a difference-maker.

With the team's third straight OAC split, the Blue Streaks remain above .500 at 10-8-1.

John Carroll is scheduled to host Mount Union on Wednesday, weather-permitting.
