Men's Tennis Commemorates Opening of Short Family Tennis Center with Sweep of Pios

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio -- 5,093 days.

That's how long it had been since John Carroll Men's Tennis played on campus. April 22, 2008 was the last match the Blue & Gold played on their true home court, known back then the Belvoir Boulevard courts.

Today, the Blue Streaks celebrated a magical homecoming. Years and years of work came to fruition as the Short Family Tennis Center held its first match. And JCU Men's Tennis christened the courts with a marvelous 9-0 victory.

"This is a dream come true for us," said Head Coach Shaun Keenan. "It means so much to our team to have a true home court to practice and play on," said Keenan. "This is incredible, I love this place. I feel like I'm still dreaming. We're very blessed."

Gustavo Garcia and Mark Beebe got the honor of the "first serve," lobbing the first-ever serve at the Short Family Tennis Center. The duo didn't waste the moment, firing to a dominant 8-0 conquest at No. 1 singles.

Logan Langovsky and Grant Sarnowski also made quick work of their foes. The No. 2 doubles team rocked out for an 8-1 win.

Griffin Millspaugh and Luis Wentz formed the final pairing at No. 3, easing to an 8-0 win.

Langovksy did the honors at No. 1 singles. The sophomore scored a quick win, a 6-0, 6-0 match. Mark Beebe didn't need much time, either, earning a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 2.

Sarnowski was his typical dominant self, rolling to a 6-1, 6-0 victory at No. 3. Nathan Palinkas rolled to a similar 6-1, 6-0 conquest at No. 4.

Sean Padden made an appearance at No. 5 singles, firing a double bagel of 6-0, 6-0. Aeneas Hines did the same at No. 6, rolling to a 6-0, 6-0 win.

"Well, I didn't want to suffer a loss," joked Keenan after the win. "Today was the perfect way to open things up on the new courts. I'm excited to see a lot more fun matches on this court. Today was the start of something special."

The John Carroll Tennis community will remember this day for a very long time. It's a day that Blue Streaks will cherish as the day that tennis at long last returned home. What was once a cracked court used for tailgating is now a world-class facility.

"I am so thankful to the Short Family for everything they've done, and to all of our generous donors," said Keenan. "Everyone at John Carroll has helped make this a reality. I am just so thankful."

Sunday's match vs. Allegheny has been postponed due to forecasted cold weather.
