Women's Tennis Commemorates 1st Home Match Since 2008 with a Sweep of Pios

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio -- 5,098 days.

That's how long it had been since John Carroll Women's Tennis played on campus. April 17, 2008 was the last match the Blue Streaks played on their true home court, then called the Belvoir Boulevard courts.

Today, the Blue Streaks celebrated a glorious homecoming. After years and years of work, the Short Family Tennis Center opened. And JCU Women's Tennis christened the courts with a 9-0 conquest.

"It means so much to our team to have a true home court to practice and play on," said Head Coach Shaun Keenan. "This is awesome, and a game changer for us. The convenience is wonderful. Our student-athletes love this facility."

Megan Reese and Mia Zivkovic formed an unstoppable pairing at No. 1 doubles. The veterans breezed through the Pios for an 8-0 conquest to get things started.

Emily Duckett and Emily Day enjoyed a similarly lopsided conquest, firing to an 8-1 victory at No. 3 doubles.

The No. 2 doubles match took the longest, as Jaclyn Voss and Caroline Chandler paired together for the first time. The duo took some times, but they did eventually vanquish Marietta's pairing, 8-5.

Meanwhile, Reese careened to a wonderful win at No. 1 singles. The senior captured a 6-1, 6-0 win. Zivkovic similarly made quick work of her foe, rolling to a 6-0, 6-0 conquest at No. 2. Morgan Little also did wonderful work, with a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 3.

Chandler raced through her battle at No. 4 doubles, with a double bagel at 6-0, 6-0. Anna Vitale notched a nice 6-2, 6-0 to follow at No. 6. And finally, Peyton Crumpler completed the team sweep with a 6-2, 6-0 victory at No. 5.

"Well, I didn't want to suffer a loss," joked Keenan of the win. "Today was the right way to open things up on the new courts. I'm excited to see a lot more fun matches on this court. Today was the start of something special."

Today was indeed like Christmas for the Blue Streaks. Today is a day that John Carroll Tennis will cherish for a long time, as the day that tennis at long last returned to the John Carroll University campus.

"I am so thankful to the Short Family for everything they've done, and to all of our generous donors," said Keenan. "Everyone at John Carroll has helped make this a reality. I am just so thankful. This is a dream come true for us."

Sunday's match vs. Allegheny has been postponed due to forecasted cold weather.
