Softball Swept at Heidelberg on the Road

TIFFIN, Ohio -- Despite playing two very solid games, John Carroll Softball returned home with two losses on Wednesday.

The Blue Streaks lost the opener in heartbreaking fashion, as the Student Princes walked off Game 1 with a 6-5 victory. John Carroll broke open a lead in Game 2, but Heidelberg got the last laugh, as a pair of 5-run innings pushed the hosts to a 10-4 win.

The sweep defeat ended a 3-game undefeated streak for JCU.

Game 1

While Heidelberg took a 1-0 lead in the first inning, the Blue Streaks answered early in the second.

A fielding error by the Student Princes put Mallory Stonebraker on first base, advancing to second on a wild pitch. After Tora Walters swapped out for Stonebraker, Serena Paterno doubled, advancing Walters to third. A hit by Kendall Trunzo loaded the bases. Crista Nativio singled, bringing in Tora Walters to tie it up.

An error at the bottom of the second allowed Heidelberg to take a 2-1 lead.

The Blue and Gold tied the game again in the top of the fourth inning. Paterno reached first on an error to start off the Blue Streaks at-bat. After Nativio was walked, a single by Gracie Bressoud created a key bases loaded. A sacrifice fly by Kasyn Scarantine allowed Paterno to score, making the score 2-2.

The Blue Streak bats came alive again in the seventh inning.

An error allowed Bressoud to make it to first base, stealing second during Scarantine's at-bat. A throwing error got Scarantine to second, allowing Bressoud to score. With Scarantine reaching third off of a ground out by Alyssia Carmichael, a double by Kristen Jesberger gave the Blue Streaks an opportunity to pull ahead 4-2.

With Kaylyn Odelli pinch-running for Jesberger, a double by Gabby Hougan furthered JCU's lead to 5-2.

John Carroll's defense was unable to hold off the Student Princes in the bottom of the seventh inning. An RBI and a bases-loaded double gave Heidelberg a 6-5 win in game one.

Game 2

The Blue Streaks fired out to a hot start after being walked off in the opener.

Kasyn Scarantine scored the opening run in the first frame, heading home on a wild pitch a few batters after she tallied a single.

Errors by Heidelberg allowed the Blue Streaks to up the lead in the top of the second. Kendall Trunzo and Crista Nativio touched home to push the lead to 3-0 for the Blue & Gold. John Carroll pushed across one more run in the third, as Gabby Hougan walked and then scored following a pair of wild pitches. But Heidelberg would allow nothing further.

The Heidelberg bats awoke in the bottom of the fourth. After holding the Student Princes off the board through three innings, Katie DeBord couldn't hold Berg at bay in the fourth. The hosts plated five quick runs, sneaking ahead, 5-4.

The Student Princes cemented the victory with a massive 5-run fifth frame.

Ahead now with a commanding 10-4 lead, the Student Princes were able to cruise the rest of the way, preventing a JCU comeback. And with it, the Student Princes walked away with a critical sweep that will have important implications for the postseason.

With the two losses today, John Carroll drops to 12-11-2 on the year, 5-6-1 in OAC play.

The Blue Streaks will look to rebound at Marietta on Saturday afternoon.
