Women's Tennis Drops to ONU on Festive Ribbon Cutting of Short Family Tennis Center

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio – It was a dreamy day in University Heights, despite the ending.

The Blue Streaks did not secure the regular-season finale victory over Ohio Northern, but the day was still a celebration for John Carroll Tennis.

On Saturday, the John Carroll community commemorated the ribbon cutting for the Short Family Tennis Center. John Carroll Athletics celebrated a gift that will have an enormous positive impact for current and future generations of Blue Streaks.

As Dave Short '81 remarked today, the word "family" is at the heart of not only the name of the facility, but of the university and the athletics program. It was indeed a family atmosphere, as Blue Streaks young and old took the court for some tennis before warmups began.

Indeed, it was a joyous day for John Carroll families, fans, and alumni.

The match on the court did not have a joyous outcome, as the match stretched on for over four hours, a match with plenty of ups and downs for John Carroll Women's Tennis. And at the end of the lengthy contest, ONU snuck away with a 6-3 win.

It was singles that won the day for the Polar Bears, as the visitors bested JCU in five of the six singles bouts. In part, the Blue Streaks ran out of gas as injuries and last night's long match caught up with the hosts.

The Blue Streaks nabbed two of the three doubles matches. Megan Reese and Morgan Little formed the combo at No. 1 doubles for the first time this season, and did well. The duo notched an 8-1 victory, opening an early lead for JCU.

The Polar Bears evened things with a win of their own at No. 3 doubles, as Jaclyn Voss and Emily Duckett couldn't get going in an 8-1 loss.

No. 2 doubles took the longest, as it would require a tiebreaker. At the end of a ferocious match, Emily Day and Caroline Chandler came out on top, winning an 8-7 conquest thanks to a one-sided 7-1 tiebreaker.

ONU started singles with a win at No. 3, as Emily Day accepted a 6-3, 6-0 defeat to sixth-year senior Katie Curry of ONU. The visitors then took the lead with a victory at No. 6 singles over Jaclyn Voss, 6-1, 6-3.

Megan Reese evened the score at 3-3 with a victory at No. 1 singles. She breezed by the opening set, 6-0, before encountering more of a fight in the second set, 6-3.

From there, it was all Polar Bears.

ONU got the lead back at 4-3 with a victory at No. 5 singles, 6-2, 6-3. But it took a while to get the win, as the final two matches required extra time.

Morgan Little found herself in a battle at No. 2 singles. She rolled to a 6-1 win in the opening set before stumbling in the second, 6-2. In the rubber match in set three, she lost a 6-3 affair and ONU got the win.

Caroline Chandler also accepted defeat in a marathon at No. 4. She won the first set, 6-4, before dropping the second, 7-5. She then lost the 10-5 tiebreaker.

John Carroll will now have to host the OAC Quarterfinal after missing out on the opening bye. JCU will host Muskingum on Tuesday.
