Baseball Upended by Spartans in Saturday Road Affair

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- On a cold Cleveland afternoon, John Carroll Baseball experienced defeat at the hands of local rival Case Western Reserve University.

The Blue Streaks dropped a 11-1 loss to the Spartans at Nobby Ballpark on Saturday.

With the defeat, JCU falls to 9-11 overall in the 2022 campaign.

John Carroll did get on the board first on the road. Benjamin Surman clubbed a 1-out double down the right field line, and then Landen Glaser knocked him in via a single through the left side. Bennett Cavaretta also notched a single, but Spartan starter Nick Denove escaped without any further damage.

Meanwhile, the Blue Streaks utilized a bullpen day on Saturday. John Gavric got through the first inning unscathed, and allowed just one run in the second before the Spartans got to him in the third. Garrett Siegel entered to stop the bleeding and got two outs. But an untimely JCU error extended the inning, allowing the Spartans to hang 5 runs on the board in the top of the third, 4 of the runs being unearned.

The Spartans spread the lead further in the fifth. The hosts posted four more runs, pushing the lead to 10-1. Case Western Reserve added another in the sixth.

John Carroll threatened in the fifth and sixth, getting runners in scoring position. Joe Olsavsky singled in the fifth and advanced on a wild pitch, but was stranded. Glaser doubled in the sixth, but got no further.

The Blue Streaks tried to make noise in the eighth, loading the bases with one out. Olsavsky and Luke Galioto singled before Glaser drew a walk. But the Spartans snuck out of the jam, drawing a strikeout and a groundout.

Glaser had a great day at the dish, hitting 3-for-3 with a double and the lone RBI. Olsavsky was the other Blue Streaks to have a multihit day, going 2-for-5. Gavric accepted the loss on the mound.

JCU will get back to the ballfield on Sunday, as the Blue Streaks will host Ohio Northern at Talty Field in the Cleveland MetroParks for a doubleheader starting at 3 pm.
