Time Atop the OAC Mountain Ends for Men's Tennis, as ONU Climbs Past JCU in Title Bout

MASON, Ohio -- A long run of dominance concluded on Saturday for John Carroll Men's Tennis.

The Blue Streaks suffered a 5-3 defeat in the Ohio Athletic Conference Tournament Championship.

Ohio Northern vanquished the Blue Streak on Saturday at the Lindner Family Tennis Center, ending JCU's hopes of a 7-peat.

Doubles opened to an auspicious start for the Blue Streaks. Mark Beebe and Gustavo Garcia did outstanding work as per usual, firing off an 8-3 victory to start things off at No. 1 doubles. Logan Langovsky and Kevin Wacnik kept things rolling at No. 2 doubles with an 8-5 conquest.

John Carroll looked poised to sweep the doubles, but Nathan Palinkas and Grant Sarnowski experienced an 8-6 setback. The 2-1 lead heading into singles was nice, but turned out to be precarious.

Ohio Northern got back to even at No. 6 singles, as Alvaro Rosabal lost a 6-1, 6-0 decision. Garcia put the Blue Streaks back in front with a 6-3, 6-1 victory. But JCU's momentum ended there.

Sarnowski dropped a 6-3, 6-1 decision at No. 5 singles, evening things up at No. 3. Then in a staggering blow, the Polar Bears picked up a win at No. 3 singles. Beebe lost a heartbreaker in the opening set, 7-6, due to a 7-5 tiebreaker loss. Then in the second set, JCU's veteran lost a 6-3 affair.

Ohio Northern got the clincher at No. 4 singles. Wacnik dropped a hard-fought 6-4, 6-4 match, and the Polar Bears broke John Carroll's lengthy run atop the conference. Logan Langovsky was in the lead, 6-3, 4-3, when the match was decided.

With the defeat, John Carroll ends the year with a 9-9 record, barring an at-large NCAA bid.
