Blue Streaks Lose Heartbreaker In Waning Seconds To Carnegie Mellon

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio -- In a hard-fought match that came down to the wire against Carnegie Mellon, the John Carroll men's soccer team lost a heartbreaker 1-0, giving up a goal from the Tartans' Brendan Schonwetter with eight seconds left on a corner kick.

Schonwetter, who entered the match with 10 minutes remaining, received the cross on the corner from Alejandro Fernandez and bounced the ball in the net to keep the Tartans' undefeated record in tact.

The win for CMU helped keep their unbeaten streak against the Blue Streaks alive, as they have not lost to JCU since 2003.

John Carroll has also not lost two straight matches at home since 2016.

The Blue Streaks did have their chances early in the match, as a centering pass found its way to Carter Esterle in the second minute, but was saved by Tartan goalie Liam Ryan.

Nicholas Felician, who had five shots during the match, sought many chances for shots on net with his closest attempt in the eighth minute as a Carnegie Mellon defender kicked the ball out of harms way just before the goal line.

John Carroll played lock down defense for most of the first half, giving up only two shot attempts while they had nine offensively.

Right from the start of the second half, the Blue Streaks continued to play with high energy.

In the 56th minute, Jake Vogrin stayed calm and collected while being tested by CMU's Josh Baugh on a ball shot low center.

JCU's Jack Foht produced a shot that missed inches to the right in the 75th minute.  Two minutes later, Michael Burrington had a shot blocked.

The Tartan defense held strong for the rest of the match, as they did not give up a JCU shot the rest of the way.

CMU continued to acquire chances late, nearly striking in the 82nd minute on a Jason Edmunds shot that went off the top crossbar and finally with Schonwetter's goal in the waning seconds.

John Carroll outshot the Tartans 16-6, and had eight shots on goal compared to CMU's three.

The Blue Streaks will look to get back in the win column on Wednesday, September 14 as they play host to Case Western Reserve with the match set for 7:30pm.
