"The Rock" Stays in University Heights for a 10th Straight Years JCU Beats BW, 21-7

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS -- John Carroll and Baldwin Wallace faced off in the home opener and John Carroll Football's Ohio Athletic Conference opener against Baldwin Wallace on a warm September Saturday in Don Shula Stadium.

While this one was not as dramatic as last year's 26-point fourth quarter, this year's Cuyahoga Gold Bowl certainly had clutch plays and great defensive plays, and JCU earned a commanding 21-7 victory.

The game started fast with a 40-yard kickoff return by Tyler Mintz after JCU won the toss and elected to receive. Evan McVay ran the ball three times for 36 yards, and then Joe Collins used the playaction and made an easy toss to Tadas Tatarunas who streaked down the sideline for an 17-yard touchdown to give JCU a 7-0 lead just a minute and a half into the game.

After allowing multiple first downs, the Blue Streak defense stood tall to force a punt at the 40-yard line, but Dylan Kooman pinned JCU inside the one yard line. Blue Streaks were forced to punt as well after just one first down. The next Yellow Jacket drive was a turnover on downs as Joey Marousek threw a deep ball to Greg Perries, but the throw was just an inch too far off the fingertips. The first quarter ended in the middle of a Baldwin Wallace drive. Marousek went 8-for-10 passing for 54 yards, and the JCU offense as a whole only had 62 yards.

After a 13-play 69-yard drive, the Blue Streaks come up empty after a missed field goal off the left upright. Baldwin Wallace took the field looking for their first points with 6:15 to play, but the Blue Streaks held strong for a three and out.

The final Yellow Jacket drive of the first half was stalled after a first down and JCU took over with 55 seconds left. Their drive came up empty and the clock ran out with the ball at midfield to end the first half.

Joe Collins had 85 passing yards on 8 completions and a touchdown at the half, McVay and Demerius Goodwin each had 26 rushing yards, and Brennan Fugh led the way receiving with 34 yards. Bricker Thiel and Tyler Thimons led the defense with six tackles each, and Thiel added a sack as well. For BW, Marousek finished the half 11-for-16 with 71 yards, Jon Murray Jr. had just 14 rushing yards, and Vinny Lomeo led receivers with 29 yards. Dillon Donoghue led defensively with six tackles, and one for loss.

Baldwin Wallace started the half with the ball but would have to punt after gaining 31 yards. The Blue Streaks started their first drive of the half with two chunk plays. Fugh caught a back shoulder pass for 22 yards, and McVay ran for 25 yards. McVay would close the drive for John Carroll with a 6-yard touchdown run for his second touchdown of the season to improve the lead to 14-0.

Baldwin Wallace started to use Reese Wamer, and their solid running attack would move down the field and into the red zone. On third and goal, Dohntay Williams highpointed a deflection in the endzone and came down with an interception to maintain the 14-0 lead for the Blue Streaks. After a punt from the endzone the third quarter ended with a 14-0 score.

The Baldwin Wallace drive ended on a fourth-down pass incomplete and a turnover on downs to start the fourth quarter.

The ensuing JCU drive saw a heavy mix of both the pass and run as McVay had multiple carries, and Tadas Tadarunas and Joe Torok each had long catches. Demerius Goodwin then took three carries from inside the 10 but could not find the endzone. A Joe Collins QB sneak was short on fourth down and BW took over with some momentum on the BW 1-yard line. However, the first play of the Baldwin Wallace drive was a deep ball and interception by Kiefer Askew to quickly get JCU the momentum back. The JCU drive went three and out and BW took over down two scores with 2:50 remaining.

Yet again, the Blue Streak defense answered. Just a moment later, JohnMarcus Roland cut off another deep ball attempt and intercepted it, and returned it for a touchdown to clinch JCU victory. Baldwin Wallace would add a touchdown on a 64 yard pass to Mikel Love but the ensuing onside kick was recovered by John Carroll to seal a 21-7 victory.

"When you think about it, what more can you ask for to open up your conference slate with a conference rival and as great of a program as Baldwin Wallace. To come up with a win today is outstanding," said Interim Head Coach Drew Nystrom.
With the win, John Carroll won their 10th straight Cuyahoga Gold Bowl, their first game of the season, and started conference play 1-0.

Evan McVay led both teams with 106 yards on the ground, Elijah Arnet of BW led both teams in receiving yards, and Joey Marousek led the way in passing yards with 201 yards. Mason Levasseur of Baldwin Wallace led the defenses with twelve tackles. Bricker Thiel and Tyler Thimons each had 10 tackles for JCU.

John Carroll will stay in University Heights next week, hosting Heidelberg for the annual Homecoming Game.
