Women's Soccer Falters at Pitt-Greensburg

GREENSBURG, Pa. -- The John Carroll University Women's Soccer team was unable to find their rhythm offensively as they fell to the University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg 3-1 on Wednesday evening.

The early 4:00 P.M. start did not bode well for the Blue Streaks as they surrendered a goal with just over three minutes into the match. It did not take long for freshman forward Maya Wertelet to score her first collegiate goal following a slick pass from Megan Hickey to put the Bobcats up 1-0.

Following some back and forth play, John Carroll's leading scorer Emily Patrzyk continued her offensive dominance by placing the ball just out of reach of Pitt-Greensburg's goalkeeper Haily Kepner. The Blue Streaks lone goal was Patryzk's her fifth goal of the season, increasing her point total to a team-high of eleven.

The Blue Streak's offense stalled as they managed just one shot on net for the remainder of the half courtesy of Alli Malinky who attempted to go bottom right with her shot but was turned away by Pitt-Greensburg's goalkeeper Kepner.

Pitt-Greensburg finished the first half strong with a number of scoring opportunities. Following back-to-back corner kicks, Logan Jennings had a chance to break the tie but just missed left. A couple minutes later, Jennings had a second crack at goal but was unable to capitalize. The Bobcats non-stop attack finally paid dividends as senior Ashley Lucas was able to put one past Blue Streak keeper Juliana Kontul to put them up 2-1 at the break.

The scoring slowed down as neither team was able to generate a shot until the 55th minute of the second half by Bobcat's Logan Jennings. The Blue Streaks had their chances to score as shots from Madyson Rosado, Emma West, and Grace Monnin were all denied by Kepner. Kepner earned the win for the Bobcats as she finished with five saves on the six shots she faced.

Ashley Lucas' second goal of the match eradicated any chance the Blue Streaks had at a comeback as they trailed 3-1 in the 81st minute. Lucas finished with a game-high four points to bring her to eleven points on the young season.

The 3-1 victory for the Bobcat's resembled the score sheet as the Bobcat's outshot the Blue Streaks 16-9 while generating four corner kicks compared to just one.

The Blue Streaks move to 2-4-2 on the year and will look to bounce back on Senior Day as they take on The College of Wooster on Sunday, September 25th at 2:00 P.M.
