Volleyball Finishes off Tough Stretch with a Road Win over La Roche

PITTSBURGH, Pa. -- Despite missing several key players, John Carroll Volleyball got the job done on Friday evening.

The Blue Streaks fought through some aches and pains on Friday evening, completing a three-in-three: 3 matches in 3 days.

Michele Benoit's Blue Streaks got the job done, overcoming La Roche on the road, 3-0: 25-13, 25-9, 25-15.

With the win, JCU improves to 12-3 on the year, extending the winning streak to seven matches.

The opening set was fairly even in the early goings, before a nice JCU run allowed the visitors to take the momentum with a 6-0 run to push the score to 16-7. La Roche made a small run to 19-12, but kills by Jessica Liddle, Morgan Wieczenski, and Steph Conley down the stretch ensured a strong start.

Two aces by Lexi MacDonald to open set two helped to keep the momentum on JCU's side. A balanced effort up front by John Carroll, despite strong defense by La Roche, provided the firepower for a 13-4 jaunt to open the second set. Setting errors by some authoritative kills by Cassi Calamunci ensured that the second set would not be decided by a close margin. Calamunci, Marissa Lynch, and Deja Whitten all got in on the fun to rout La Roche.

After a 2-2 start to set three, the Blue Streaks' offense boiled over for a 5-0 run. Kills by Wieczenski and Calamunci, plus a MacDonald ace, fired up a 5-0 JCU streak to further the lead to 16-7. Some nice plays by La Roche prevented a blowout score, but Wieczenski and Jennifer Follmer provided the final nails in the coffin with nice kills.

The Blue Streaks' Yinzers performed well in the Steel City. Maddie Maziarz, a Bishop Canevin alum, served as the primary setter, leading the team in both assists with 17 and digs with 17. South Fayette grad Haley Nicholson also got nice playing time in the win, tabbing 8 assists.

Up front, Calamunci topped the team with 10 kills, adding 6 digs. Follmer and Conley each managed 5 kills apiece. Wieczenski, an Upper St. Clair grad, registered 3 kills. MacDonald tabbed 16 digs, while Payton Miozzi mapped 12 digs.
