Erie's Favorite Son Deals Defeat to Penn State Behrend

ERIE, Pa. -- The sledding has been tough at home for John Carroll Men's Soccer, with three Top 20 ranked opponents visiting Don Shula Stadium so far this fall.

The road has been kinder, including tonight, thanks in part to a homecoming celebration for Jack Foht.

The sophomore returned to his native city on Wednesday, and helped the visiting Blue Streaks deal host Penn State Behrend a 1-0 defeat.

The Blue Streaks were keen to get vengeance after Penn State Behrend dealt JCU its only home loss of the fall 2021 campaign, though the hosts got the first shot on net. But Jake Vogrin stood equal to the chance in the sixth minute.

Nicholas Felician sent a shot wide in the 12th minute and JCU continued to apply pressure with corner kicks. John Carroll garnered a penalty kick in the 27th minute but missed the chance, and a follow-up chance also did not make it in. But in the 33rd minute, JCU did not miss.

Patrick Koenig started the chance with a shot on goal, turned away by the PSB keeper. But Jack Foht was ready, and fired it home off a Koenig assist for his third goal of the young campaign.

The tally for the Erie native proved to be the difference in the second game of a soccer doubleheader today at Penn State Behrend.

Each team tallied shots in the final minutes of the half, but nothing came of it. John Carroll stood on top entering the break. Koenig continued to be active early in the second half, with a corner kick and then a shot on goal, and yet another later in the 61st minute. The Blue Streaks looked to add to the lead as the half continued, especially between the 66th-70th minutes, but nothing came of the tries.

Despite some fouls and some yellow cards for each team, the offenses did not gain much traction, so Foht's goal stood as the winner.

The non-conference slate is now out of the way for John Carroll. JCU finishes out of conference play with a 5-3-1 mark, including 4-0-1 on the road.

So, the Blue Streaks now turn their attention to the all-important OAC schedule, starting with a home match vs. Wilmington on Saturday at 7 pm.
