Women's Soccer Withstands Wittenberg's Offensive Onslaught for a Road Win

WITTENBERG, Ohio --
The John Carroll Women's Soccer team came away with a narrow 2-1 road win on Wednesday evening.

The Blue Streaks' first win of the 2022 season did not come easy, but two first-half goals were enough to fend off the pesky Wittenberg Tigers.

Tonight's non-conference affair was a battle between unfamiliar teams, as this was the first matchup between the two sides since 1994.

Wednesday night's matchup against Wittenberg University started off slow for the Blue Streaks. Not even five minutes into the match, Wittenberg midfielder Brooke Peters played a perfect through ball from near midfield to forward Hannah Heald who was one-on-one with the Blue Streaks keeper. Heald capitalized on the pass and was able to tuck the ball into the bottom right corner of the net giving Wittenberg a 1-0 lead.

John Carroll answered with some offensive pressure of their own with a couple of shots from defender Jennifer Crowley. The consistent pressure led to a John Carroll free kick taken by Gabriella Walter. The free kick was sent into the box leading to an Wittenberg own goal.

The Blue Streaks' consistent attack yet again paid dividends following a Wittenberg turnover forced by Emily Patrzyk. Following the steal, Patrzyk buried a line drive shot in the upper right corner of the net to give the Blue Streaks a 2-1 lead into the half.

Wittenberg did not go away as they continued their offensive attack in the second half. The Tigers outshot the Blue Streaks 17-2 in the second half. Overall, the Blue Streaks were outshot 27 to six for the game. Yet, Blue Streaks only surrendered one goal courtesy of the magnificent performances from both Juliana Kontul who tallied five saves in the first half and Mackenzie Stease who tallied six saves in the second half.

The victory comes despite a significant disparity in shots. Wittenberg outshot the Blue Streaks by a wide margin, 27-6. This is the first time in this millennium that John Carroll has allowed twenty or more shots and has shot ten or less shots and have won a game. Mackenzie Stease pitched a second-half shutout with 6 saves, while Juliana Kontul made 5 saves in the opening frame.

The Blue Streaks move to 1-0-2 on the year and will be back in action Friday, September 9, as they travel to Illinois to take on Wheaton College (and then Pacific Lutheran on Saturday). Kickoff is set for 7:00 P.M. on Friday.
