Men's Basketball Staves Off Fightin' Quakers at Home

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS – The John Carroll Men's Basketball Team added a fifth win to their current streak, edging out the Fightin' Quakers of Wilmington 66-64.

Sophomores Luke Frazier and Luke Chicone were the spark plugs to the Blue Streak offense, combining for 38 points.

John Carroll advanced to 13-2 on the season with the win at the Tony DeCarlo Varsity Center, including 7-1 in Ohio Athletic Conference play.

The Blue Streaks offense struggled to keep up with Wilmington early in the first half, going down quickly in the opening minutes. Frazier and Chicone quickly shifted the momentum in favor of JCU with their explosive play on offense.

Both Frazier and Chicone combined for 25 of John Carroll's 35 points in the first half.

The second half started in favor of the Blue Streaks, with JCU leading by as much as nine in the middle of the half. Their surge was boosted by aggressive play down low in the post. JCU ended the second half outrebounding the Quakers, 19-11.

What seemed to be a hot streak from JCU quickly ended from a sneaky comeback from Wilmington with five minutes left. Andrew Clark put up seven points in a span of three minutes to cut the lead to three with two minutes left.

But the Blue Streaks shut the door on the Quakers with a clutch basket to put JCU up by five with a minute left. Even with a late layup from Wilmington's Abdul Kanu, John Carroll's defense held strong to keep their undefeated record at home alive at 8-0 on the season.

Chicone finished the night leading JCU in points (20) and rebounds (6). Frazier ended the contest with 18 points, and sophomore forward Henry Raynor tallied six rebounds as well.

The Blue Streaks outscored the Quakers in the paint, 40-26, making up for Wilmington's huge advantage behind the arc (the Quakers made 10 shots from 3-point range, while the Blue Streaks sank only one).

John Carroll will host conference rivals Baldwin Wallace on Wednesday at 7 pm in the DeCarlo Center.
