Women's Soccer Clips Cardinals to Remain Atop the OAC Standings

WESTERVILLE, Ohio -- Six straight matches.

Entering tonight, John Carroll Women's Soccer had won six matches in a row, unbeaten since September 1, 2023. And after tonight, the Blue Streaks have won seven in a row overall, but also have another 6-match streak.

With a victory tonight, the Blue Streaks are 6-0 in Ohio Athletic Conference play, the program's best start to league play since 2002.

In order to extend both of those streaks, the Blue Streaks had to travel to Otterbein University and battle the 9-2-2 Otterbein Cardinals. Prior to the match, the Blue Streaks stood tied with the Cardinals for the top spot in the conference, with both programs entering the match with 5-0 OAC records.

Otterbein has had their way with John Carroll in recent history, as the Cardinals had won 8 of their last 10 against the Blue Streaks. The history didn't matter tonight, as in the OAC Match of the Week, the Blue Streaks managed a 1-0 win.

The lone goal of the match came in the 72nd minute. Emma West delivered the game-winner for the Blue Streaks.

After Sara Gennuso's crosser was deflected towards the middle of the box, West beat her defender to the ball and lofted a shot towards the top left corner. Ella Schwertfager had the ball slip between her gloves and it trickled into the goal.

While it was only West's second goal of the season, it was one of the most significant for the Blue Streaks.

The battle between the top two teams in the OAC began with the prolonged 72-minute standoff, which extended deep into the second half, until West put the Blue Streaks on top.

The first half of action was a defensive grind, as neither side seemed capable of orchestrating an offensive attack. While the Cardinals did fire off 6 shots, they were relatively low-quality looks, as only 2 of them were on target.

The Blue Streaks struggled in the early going on offense, as well. The visitors failed to register a single shot on goal in the first half and Meredith Coloian recorded the team's only shot.

For whatever shortcomings the offense had on Wednesday, the defense with Madeline Martin Kosier at the back end more than made up for it.

Kosier made the play of the first half just two minutes into the match. Morgan Somers weaved between several JCU defenders and launched a shot towards the top right corner of the net. The former OAC Athlete of the Week played it beautifully and knocked the shot clear over the top of the woodwork. It marked the first of her two first-half saves.

Led by Emily Patrzyk, the offensive attack began to materialize in the early minutes of the second half. Patrzyk registered three shots in the first five minutes of the second half. While the first two were off-target, the third attempt forced Schwertfager to make her first save of the night. The Blue Streaks showed their first signs of life since the 11th minute.

The drought finally ended with West's goal in the 71st minute.

The Cardinals sent 5 shots into the box over the final 19 minutes of play. Only one of them made it to Kosier, which was a lazy floater that she corralled with both arms. It was her seventh and final save of the match.

In the OAC Game of the Week, the Blue Streaks once again prevailed by way of their top-tier defense. They also remained atop the OAC standings and are in a prime position to secure the top seed in the conference tournament.

The Blue Streaks will put their seven-match win streak on the line against Capital University on Saturday. Kick-off is slated for 7 pm in Bexley, OH.
