Blue Streaks Catapult Past Comets on the Road

BEXLEY, Ohio – On a trademark October fall Saturday, John Carroll Football traveled south down I-71 to confront the Capital Comets.

The Blue Streaks remain unbeaten in Ohio Athletic Conference play after the contest, taking care of business against the Comets in a 63-17 victory.

The story of the day was another dominant effort by the offensive line, paving the way for 539 yards on offense; plus a stout defense that controlled the line of scrimmage.

John Carroll got the ball first and made quick work of the opponents. Joe Collins opened things up with a pass to Joe Torok for 24 yards. A few plays later, Evan McVay hauled in a Collins pass in the left flat, and dashed 15 yards to paydirt for the 7-0 lead.

The Comets responded with a solid drive, capped off by a 30-yard field goal. JCU authored a nice response, with a 32-yard Mason Sullivan reception and a 10-yard Dorian Facen Jr. catch setting up the Blue Streaks in the red zone. On 2nd and 5 from the Capital 7-yard line, Brennan Fugh ran a perfect fade route to the back left pylon, and hauled in a beautiful ball from Collins for a 14-3 lead.

Following a quick Capital three-and-out, the Blue Streaks started a drive as the quarter concluded. On the first play of the second quarter, McVay used great blocks by Lucas D'Orazio and Jake Lang to dash into the left side of the end zone to push the advantage to 21-3.

An Ian Thomas sack halted Capital's ensuing drive. A couple plays later, Collins hit Fugh on a deep ball. On the very next play, the JCU coaching staff reached  into the bag of tricks. Collins faked a simple handoff before handing off behind to Tyler Mintz. The veteran dashed untouched 33 yards to the end zone, with blocks by Matt Wrather and others giving him plenty of room to run.

Capital then got back on the scoreboard with a 27-yard touchdown pass, narrowing the deficit to 28-10. JCU got the ball back with 4:53 and proceeded to end any sign of a comeback with a meticulous drive. On the ninth play of a 65-yard drive, Evan McVay got some nice blocks from D'Orazio and Jon Tomcufcik to burst into the end zone from 10 yards out. The Blue Streaks took that 35-10 lead into the break.

A quick three-and-out by the Comets got the ball to John Carroll early in the third quarter. The Blue Streaks proceeded to use 12 plays to march 65 yards, with McVay hauling in a 4-yard playaction pass from Collins for the finisher.

Nikko Georgiou took the reins of the offense the next drive, and the freshman acquitted himself well. The Chagrin Falls native ushered the Blue Streaks down the field, with Quincy Newsom getting the work in the backfield. The Twinsburg native reached paydirt for the third time this season, as great blocking from the offensive line helped him find space. Newsom needed to step past a defender at the 24-yard line, but was barely touched. Matt Wrather's pull block to get the edge rusher opened the lane for Newsom to sprint through. JCU carried a decisive 49-10 lead into the fourth quarter.

The lead increased further following a Lamar Thomas interception. Javi Quimba caught a high snap and dashed to the left, utilizing nice blocking by the O-Line to scamper 37 yards to the end zone.

Following a Capital score, the Blue Streaks finished off the scoring. Jack Cardaman returned the ensuing kickoff 96 yards, aided by blocks by Jake Lang and Luke Mazowiecki, on a wonderful play.

The Blue Streaks' 63 points scored marks a season high, and the most since JCU's 2019 victory in Bexley.

Joe Collins guided the effort with 17-of-21 passing for 246 yards and 3 touchdowns. With his effort today, Collins leaps past the legendary Larry Wanke with 4,093 passing yards, now eighth all-time in passing in program history. Collins also passed Wanke for total yards today, as the Michigander now stands 10th all-time in total offensive yardage with 4,052.

Meanwhile, Brennan Fugh has surpassed Jeff Lerner with 21 receiving touchdowns, good for sixth all-time. Fugh has also passed Aramis Greenwood for third all-time in receiving yards with 2,514. Joe Torok did lead the wideouts today, though, with 6 catches for 87 yards. Eight different players caught a pass today.

On the ground, the Blue Streaks are now averaging 5.2 yards per rush on the year, which ranks fifth in program history. Eight different players got carries, with Evan McVay leading all with 14 carries for 90 yards and a pair of scores. For the day, McVay led the offensive production with 4 TDs.

A new face led the team in tackling, as freshman Tony Tirado topped the team with 8 tackles. Tyler Thimons followed closely behind with 6 stops. Jahiem Peake starred with 5 tackles, 1 tackle for loss, and 0.5 sacks. Sophomore Mason Rus shined, as well, with 5 tackles and 1.5 tackles for loss. Ian Thomas was a menace on the defensive line, with 3 tackles, 2 TFL, 1 sack, and 3 quarterback hurries. JCU finished with a cool 9 quarterback hurries and 2 sacks.

The Blue Streaks will be back in action next Saturday, as John Carroll will host Muskingum at 1:30 pm for Senior Day and Cancer Awareness Day Presented by Cleveland Clinic.
