Men’s Soccer prevails over Marietta on Wenzler’s Warriors Night

The Blue Streaks’ OAC success continued on Saturday night as they still remain atop the conference.

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS - Chris Wenzler '90 loved JCU Soccer as he covered over 260 Men's Soccer home events during his storied tenure as the Sports Information Director of John Carroll Athletics.

Dejan Mladenovic and his soccer program honored Chris Wenzler's legacy on Wenzler's Warriors night at Shula Stadium with a 5-1 win over Marietta.

Moments before kickoff, a double rainbow was seen above Chris's house just beyond Don Shula Stadium. There is no doubt he was watching the Blue Streaks, alongside all of us, pick up another Ohio Athletic Conference win.

As far as action goes in the first half, there was none to speak of until a daring pass by Izac Coleman set up Nicholas Graeca for the first goal of the contest in the 29th minute.

Graeca chipped the goalkeeper and found the heart of the back of the net. It marked Graeca's first goal since he scored the lone goal in a 2-1 loss to Denison University on September 20 loss.

Goals typically come in bunches for the Blue Streaks, and that stayed true on Saturday evening.

Jack Foht tacked on another goal for the Blue Streaks in the 37th minute. The goal was set into motion by a gorgeous cross from Patrick Koenig. Foht has now scored four goals in the past two matches after his hat-trick performance against Heidelberg.

The final 13 minutes of the first half rolled quietly off the clock and Wenzler's Warriors took their 2-0 lead into halftime.

Heading into the second half, the Blue Streaks had all the momentum on their side. However, they were unable to transfer it back to the pitch until the 65th minute.

A trio of Blue Streaks combined for a masterpiece of a goal that gave the home team a 3-0 lead.

Hayden Haffner mobilized the attack with a pass to Jayden Wright who jogged down the near sideline. After making the pass, Haffner cruised down into the box where he fielded a pass back from Wright. Haffner quickly sent the ball back towards the middle of the box, where Ben Brucken sent it flying past the goalkeeper.

Haffner and Wright each picked up an assist on the attack, their fifth and third respectively, while Brucken recorded his first goal of the season.

Just a mere three minutes later, the Pioneers got on the board. Payton Maynard launched a beautiful ball that curled around the outstretched arms of Brenden Moher and just inside the top right corner of the woodwork.

Even with a two-goal advantage, the top-ranked team in the OAC was not yet satisfied with their efforts on Saturday evening.

"Offensively, we're starting to click and we're creating opportunities to score goals," said Mladenovic. "But tonight, in terms of an overall performance, it was not enough. We need to be more consistent from half to half and game to game as we continue in OAC play."

The Blue Streaks added two more goals in the 82nd and 87th minutes.

Graeca found the back of the net once more for his second goal of the match. Kalic was credited with the assist, his first of the season.

Just a few minutes later, Brenden Swann netted a penalty kick that solidified the 5-1 final score. The graduate student earned his first goal of the season.

While the rain may have dampened the pitch, it could not diminish the spirits of every Blue Streak in attendance, who all shared a part in the Wenzler's Warriors victory.

Now 9-2-1, next up for the Blue Streaks is a brief road trip down to Berea, Ohio on Wednesday where the 5-6-2 Yellow Jackets await them.
