Blue Streaks Defeat Marietta on Alumnae Day at Home

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS – After a hard fought battle on wednesday, the Blue Streaks were back at home with a game against Ohio Athletic Conference opponent Marietta. A large home crowd attended the match at the Tony DeCarlo Varsity Center for John Carroll Volleyball's Alumnae Day.

Both teams came into the afternoon with two conference games on the season, looking to improve their records. Both teams today had their own Kryptonites, JCU's being service errors and the Pioneers' being net infractions. In the end, John Carroll won its first OAC home game of the season, 3-1, in a close matchup initially that saw the Blue Streaks find a groove down the stretch.

John Carroll won with set scores of 23-25, 25-20, 25-19, 25-18.

The first set started with two long rallies that both ended in JCU points, and the long rallies did not end there. Both teams answered back with smart plays and strong hits to keep points alive and the set close. The blocking duo of freshman Mary Kate Sheehan and sophomore Kendra Dziubinski played a key role in the Blue Streak defense at the net with back-to-back blocks. Marietta sophomore hitter Jillian Fellers answered back with crucial kills to keep the score close and pull ahead for the first time of the day. The Blue Streaks and Pioneers continued to trade the lead back and forth until the very end. Set one ended with a score of 25-23 in favor of Marietta. Senior Jennifer Folmer added a strong effort to the Blue Streak offense with 4 kills on 9 total attacks.

Set two started in the same fashion that set one ended with the teams keeping the score close early on. Senior Payton Miozzi showed hustle and dedication saving multiple balls that were difficult to read. Marietta stayed within striking distance with the help of sophomore libero Kiera Shannon giving them life in the back row, but John Carroll still furthered their lead with the largest gap of the set being 6 points in favor of the home team. A point replay on official error changed the momentum of the game in favor of the Pioneers, allowing them to close the gap to within two points. But it was not enough to stop the Blue Streaks from winning the set, 25-20, to tie the day at one set a piece. Senior Maddie Maziarz led her offense to a win with 7 assists in the set.

The third set of the afternoon followed the same pattern of staying close early on, as Sheehan and junior Jessica Liddle blocked a hard hit by Marietta's Jillian Fellers to keep Carroll on top of the match. Fellers answered back with kills on two subsequent points to keep the game within reach. Smart reads by Maziarz and Folmer kept the lead for the Blue Streaks, but service errors offered Marietta a window to close the gap once again to only one point. The duo of Maggie and Jillian Fellers, sophomore and senior sisters from Alliance, were the centerpiece for the Pioneers this set to keep it close. However, John Carroll was still the better team, ending the set on a kill from Follmer, 25-19.

Set four picked up with Maddie Maziarz at the service line. Unforced errors saw Marietta fall behind early and gave the Blue Streaks an early lead of 5-1. JCU extended its lead to 14-5 thanks to strong attacks from freshman Hailey Williams and Mary Kate Sheehan. Junior Jessica Liddle offered 20 total attacks on the day, but Hailey ended the game with a stunning kill at the net. John Carroll took the match 25-18.

Senior Marissa Lynch had a strong presence on the afternoon with 11 kills. She was only outdone in kills only by Jennifer Folmer, who had 13 on the day, many on smart plays. Maddie Maziarz held the Blue Streaks together with 29 assists and 8 digs next to senior Lexi MacDonald, who logged 20 digs.

The Blue Streaks move up to 2-1 in OAC play, 13-6 on the season overall. Michele Benoit's team will be back in action across town in Berea on Wednesday, October 11 against Baldwin Wallace, and back home on October 18 against Otterbein.
