Blue Streaks Dropped by #2 Purple Raiders on Salute to Service Day

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS – Today was unfortunately not the Blue Streaks' day.

#13/15 John Carroll Football lost a tough one at Don Shula Stadium, as #2 Mount Union dominated the Blue Streaks to the tune of a 49-14 score on Salute to Service Day.

A couple key fourth-down misses told the tale of the game, as John Carroll failed two fourth-down conversions after entering the day as the only team in Division III with a perfect fourth-down conversion rate.

With the defeat, the Blue Streaks drop to 7-2 on the season, marking JCU's first loss in Ohio Athletic Conference play.

John Carroll won the toss and declined, giving Mount Union the ball first. The Purple Raiders traveled into JCU territory but were stopped at the JCU 41-yard line. The JCU offense could not get anything going, as the Purple Raiders tallied just the third sack allowed by JCU this season.

Mount Union was not to be denied on the following drive. The Purple Raiders managed to slowly get the ball down the field with smart passes and a few smart runs, including a 1-yard Tyler Echeverry score on the 11th play of the drive.

The response did not take overly long to come together. A 41-yard connection from Joe Collins to Brennan Fugh got JCU deep inside the Purple Raider territory. A couple plays later, Evan McVay run to the left out of the Wildcat formation led to a 2-yard TD with 3 seconds left in the first quarter.

The Purple Raiders responded by slowly matriculating the ball down the field on an 11-play, 75-play drive that concluded with a short Braxton Plunk rushing score. Following a JCU punt, the Raiders did the same thing, adding a short Plunk TD but this time of the passing variety. The leadup was also shorter. Wayne Ruby, Jr. set things up with a 52-yard punt return to the JCU 24-yard line. So with 5:42 left in the second quarter, Mount Union stood in front, 21-7.

Disaster struck again on the second drive of JCU's ensuing possession. Mount Union tallied a pick-six, as Ian Sexton grabbed it out of a Blue Streak's hands and dashed to paydirt for six, pushing the visitors up 28-7.

The Blue Streaks needed a response, and were so close to creating one. A 20-yard Fugh catch placed John Carroll in position to make it happen, getting a first and goal. But on 4th and goal from the 2-yard line, the Purple Raiders shut down the Blue Streaks.

The failed 4th down conversion was JCU's first miss on fourth down of the year, and a critical one at that, changing the dynamic of the game. As a result, the Purple Raiders carried a 28-7 lead into the break.

Collins guided the Blue Streaks down the field, just like JCU needed to stay in the game. The veteran completed passes of 24, 29, and 21 yards, the last of which was a TD scoring strike to Joe Torok on a beautiful ball. But the Raiders immediately responded in kind, as Plunk found Ruby Jr. for a 60-yard scoring strike. Ruby Jr. appeared to perhaps step out of bounds at one point, but the fifth-year tiptoed the sideline to paydirt to push the lead back to 35-14.

John Carroll got back down the field in a key drive, as Collins marched the Blue Streaks down the field. However after some nice passing down the field, the Blue Streaks' drive stalled deep in Mount Union territory for the second time, but this time Collins went down after a fourth-down sack.

The Purple Raiders added a knockout blow on the first play of the fourth quarter, pushing the advantage to 42-14. Mount Union also scored on its next drive following an interception.

Brennan Fugh tallied 8 catches for 109 yards. Joe Torok also surpassed the century mark in receiving with 100 yards on 6 receptions. Joe Collins finished 17-of-26 passing for 261 yards and a TD. On defense, Jahiem Peake led the unit with 10 tackles, including 2 tackles for loss. Chris Golson and Jacob Hufnagel each tabbed 8 tackles.

The season will conclude for the Blue Streaks next week, as the men of Jeff Behrman '95 will complete the campaign at Otterbein.
