DMR and 400m Titles Highlight Day 1 of OAC Indoor Championships

BEREA, Ohio – First place finishes by the Distance Medley Relay team and freshman Basheer Alramahi in the 400m highlighted Day 1 of the 2023 Ohio Athletic Conference Indoor Track & Field Championships for John Carroll's men's team.

The Blue Streaks ended the first day of the championships at Baldwin Wallace's Lou Higgins Center Fieldhouse in second place with 41 points behind Mount Union's 92. Wilmington closed out in a close third with 38 points.

The DMR team consisting of Ethan Domitrovich, Garrett Clark, Caleb Correia, and Alex Phillip broke a 16 year old OAC Indoor Championships record with a mark of 9:53.41, and bested second place Mount Union by about 35 seconds.

Alramahi, who also plays on the JCU soccer team, won the 400m with a time of 48.84 which also set a facility record.

Dustin Horner (50.94) and Mick Doyle (51.10) each placed seventh and eighth in the event as well.

The Blue Streaks went 3-4-5 in the 500m, led by former JCU baseball player Tyler Gast's All-OAC effort with a mark of 1:06.11. Max Grillo (1:06.62) and Ian Paul (1:06.67) finished milliseconds behind to score more team points.

Joe Backus (15:17.27) came in seventh in the 5000m, while Tommy Naiman (15:21.33) finished tenth.

In the field events, Corey Minton placed eighth place in the long jump (6.56m) while Jimmy Kartsonas just missed getting on the scoresheet with a 6.55m finish to end right behind Minton in ninth.

Noah Schroeder (15.01m) and Matthew Russo (14.95m) each finished ninth and tenth in the weight throw, respectfully.

JCU will look to finish strong on the final day of the OAC Championships on Saturday, February 25 with field events starting at 10:00 AM and running events at 2:30 PM.
