Phillip and Clark Help Lead Blue Streaks To Second Place Finish At OAC Indoor Championships

Alex Phillip being recognized as the OAC Indoor Most Outstanding Distance Athlete by breaking three conference meet records throughout the weekend.
BEREA, Ohio – The John Carroll men's track & field team took second place at the Ohio Athletic Conference Indoor Championships hosted by Baldwin Wallace as they scored 140 points.  Mount Union (243) won their eleventh consecutive conference title, while Ohio Northern (90) came in third.

The Blue Streaks were led by Alex Phillip and Garrett Clark, who were named Most Outstanding Distance Athlete and Don Frail Most Outstanding Sprint Athlete of the meet, respectfully.

Phillip broke two 46 year old OAC Indoor Championships records on Day 2 in the mile and 3000m, both set by Baldwin Wallace's Larry Coy in 1977.

The reigning national champion in the 3000m ran in a time of 8:11.81, which broke the record by 14 seconds.  He ran the mile in 4:10.14.

Clark also made noise during the final day with a first place finish and OAC record in the 200m (21.65).  The graduate student finished third in the 55m (6.43) for a new PR and earn All-OAC honors for the second straight year in the short sprint.

Caleb Correia was the other winner for JCU, as he came away victorious in the 800m (1:54.39). 

In addition to Phillip in the 3000m, Ethan Domitrovich (8:23.96) placed fourth while Joe Backus (8:47.42) finished in tenth.  John Shoemaker (4:17.72) and Dominic Delmoro (4:17.73) each finished fifth and sixth in the mile, respectfully.

Jimmy Kartsonas placed seventh in the 55m (6.55), and Basheer Alramahi (sixth, 22.58) and Dustin Horner (tenth, 22.88) joined Clark in the 200m.

Freshman Max Grillo came in second to earn All-OAC honors in the 1000m (2:31.98).  Ian Paul (2:35.27) ended in seventh, while John Shoemaker (2:36.77) and Mike Hvidos (2:36.94) each finished in the top 10 as well.

The 4x400 relay team of Mick Doyle, Correia, Brody Hanlon, and Paul earned third with a time of 3:24.64 to finish All-OAC.  Doyle was also on the 4x200 squad with Victor Ononogbo, Horner, and Tyler Gast that ended in fourth (1:31.96).

As for the field events, Corey Minton earned All-OAC with a second place finish in the triple jump (13.56m) while Kartsonas came in fifth (13.56m).

Zach Szafarski (14.43m) was the lone Blue Streak in the top eight in the shot put, as he was sixth.

Some JCU athletes will compete in the Polar Bear Final Qualifier at Ohio Northern next Friday and Saturday, March 3-4 while others will be gearing up for the NCAA Indoor Championships which take place March 10-11 in Birmingham, Alabama.
