Men's Basketball Roars Past Marietta at Home on Senior Day

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS – John Carroll's Men's Basketball team has been rolling, winning ten straight heading into a Senior Day matchup against a Marietta squad standing in fourth in the Ohio Athletic Conference standings. Perched in first, the #7 Blue Streaks looked to remain in the driver's seat in the OAC.

The Blue Streaks did just that with a great 89-75 win at the Tony DeCarlo Varsity Center.

Seniors Eric Hanna and William Wallace were congratulated pregame for all their hard work and dedication to the program the past four years. The duo has combined for more than 600 points throughout their four years as a Blue Streak.

The Blue Streks started off quickly, winning the tip and scoring off a mid range jumper by Luke Frazier. John Carroll would immediately go into their full court press off the bucket. The full court press worked, speeding up Marietta and making it difficult for them to get the ball over halfcourt.

Marietta did not go away that easily, however, calming down and hitting a number of threes to put themselves up 12-10 at the fifteen minute mark. The Blue Streaks shot back, creating two quick turnovers off their press to take a 19-14 lead just a minute later.

The entirety of the first half was a back and forth battle, with no lead larger than eight being held by either team. A Marietta 3-pointer at the buzzer made the score 44-39 going into halftime. Luke Frazier and Luke Chicone led the scoring in the first half with a combined 23 points. Henry Raynor led the team in rebounds with 4.

John Carroll started the second half with the ball and set the tone. A beautiful pass from Luke Frazier set Chase Toppin up with an easy layup. The Blue Streaks would not let up, playing gritty defense and contining to get great looks and securing points, building a ten point lead in the fourteenth minute, making the score 61-51.

Will Yontek came alive and helped the Blue Streaks go on a 9-3 run, building the lead to 70-54 with twelve minutes left. From there it was all John Carroll, scoring with ease from wherever they wanted.

With two minutes left, Eric Hanna scored a circus layup that filled the Tony DeCarlo Varsity center in cheers, capping off a senior day win, 89-75.

Luke Frazier led the team with 23 points, and had high praise for the team as a whole.

"We have so much depth and talent on the bench that could go anywhere and start in the OAC, so it's great to know they have our back," Frazier said.

Raynor filled up the stats sheet with 16 points, 10 rebounds, and an astounding 6 blocks in the dominant win. This marks the first time since 2017-18 that the Blue Streaks have swept the season series against the Pios.

The Blue Streaks are back in action at home on Wednesday, February 8 where they take on Otterbein University for the final home game of the regular season.
