Men's Tennis Looks Good in Narrow Loss to Ashland

MAYFIELD, Ohio -- While it was a losing effort, John Carroll Men's Tennis looked good on Wednesday afternoon.

The Blue Streaks dropped a 6-3 decision to Division II Ashland, but performed well in the defeat indoors at Mayfield Village Racquet Club.

While John Carroll drops to 1-10 on the year, the Blue Streaks have looked solid against higher-level competition.

The match began with spirited doubles contests. Kevin Wacnik and Phillip Gorun compiled an impressive 8-5 victory at #3 doubles, roaring late down the stretch to take the hard-fought battle. Logan Langovsky and Nathan Palinkas also had a close affair at #2 doubles, but dropped an 8-5 loss.

Grant Sarnowski heated up as the day continued, coming out victorious after a war at #2 singles. The Springfield, Illinois native won the first set, 6-3, before dropping the second set 7-6 by virtue of a 10-2 tiebreaker. But the junior roared in the match tiebreaker for a 10-7 conquest.

Anthony Markello also came out on top at #3 singles. Following a 7-5 set one win, Markello dispatched his foe with ease in the second set, 6-1.

Langovsky played to a close 6-4, 6-4 loss at #1 singles. Kevin Wacnik played well at #3 singles despite a 6-3, 6-3 loss. Nathan Palinkas lost at #5 (6-2, 6-2) and Phillip Gorun lost a close one at #6 (6-4, 6-2).

The Blue Streaks will get back to action on Saturday, April 1. The Blue Streaks will host Capital University at the Short Family Tennis Center for the team's home opener, weather permitting.
