Men's Track & Field Begins Outdoor Season with Second-Place Finish at Muskingum

Victor Ononogbo tallied a new outdoor personal best in the 400m.
NEW CONCORD, Ohio – Outdoor track & field season got underway this weekend for John Carroll Men's Track & Field. 

The Blue Streaks opened the outdoor campaign at Muskingum's Amy Adams Invitational at Johnson Family Track in New Concord.

The Blue Streaks finished second place as a team.

Ethan Domitrovich provided a nice highlight in the 2000m Steeplechase. The junior secured a track and event record with a winning time of 6:06.60 in the event, breaking the previous track record by Ryan Scanlon in 2018 (6:26.38). Ian Paul finished in second place in 6:41.80. 

John Shoemaker set a new PR in the 5000m, as JCU's lone rep in the top-15. The Westerville, Ohio native earned a time of 15:22.23, good enough for sixth place. 

Mike Shipman set a new PR in the 1500m, roaring for third with a time of 4:13.50. Jack Root followed closely in fourth at 4:14.70, while Jacob Gerhardt trailed in fifth at 4:19.30. 

Joe Backus competed in the 800m for just the third time in his career, the first since May 2021. The veteran looked great running the event regardless, setting a new PR with a time of 1:58.59, enough for second. Dominic Delmoro tabbed third for a time of 1:59.78. John Shoemaker also got a top-10 spot, coming in seventh in 2:02.95. 

Moving to the sprints, Victor Ononogbo tallied a new outdoor personal best in the 400m. The sophomore snagged a time of 51.33 for fifth. Evan Piscitani nabbed ninth in 54.22. 

Garrett Clark began his outdoor season with a bang, clocking in at 10.81 in the 100m. That time placed him second, and puts him 13th nationally unofficially. Jimmy Kartsonas also looked good with a third-place time of 10.95. 

In the field events, Matthew Russo highlighted the day with a strong mark of 14.64m in the shot put. That tally locked him in at second Zach Szafarski also thrived with a tally of 13.83m for fourth, followed by Noah Schroeder earning seventh at 13.34m. 

A quartet repped JCU in the hammer throw. Russo guided the contingent with a mark of 46.41m in seventh, followed by Schroeder at 45.81m in eighth. Szarski (41.80m) and Gorman (35.15m) also finished top-15.
