Men's Lacrosse Stymied by Yellow Jackets in Berea

BEREA, Ohio -- The last time the John Carroll Men's Lacrosse team traveled to take on Ohio Athletic Conference rival Baldwin Wallace, they claimed the OAC Championship last May.

The Blue Streaks could not find the same success tonight, falling to the Yellow Jackets, 8-4.

With the loss, the Blue Streaks drop to 5-2 on the season, and 1-1 in OAC play.

The Yellow Jackets took the lead early in the game, winning the opening faceoff and finding the back of the net. Tanner Gill-Snow and Matt Berdysiak attempted to even the score right away, but a save by Baldwin Wallace's goalie sent the ball down to the other end of the field.

The Yellow Jacket offense was unrelenting, tallying another goal to take a 2-0 lead.

With just under five minutes left in the opening quarter, Gill-Snow scored with an assist by Morgan Morrell to cut the Baldwin Wallace lead in half. Both teams fought for the ball at midfield at the end of the quarter, but neither team was able to take possession long enough to score, keeping the score 2-1 after the first 15 minutes of play.

Baldwin Wallace once again opened the scoring in the second quarter, taking advantage of a lucky bounce deep in the John Carroll zone. The Yellow Jackets continued to play aggressively on offense, but both teams began to stall out on offense, with neither team scoring for almost nine minutes.

After a costly turnover by the Blue Streaks, the Yellow Jackets were able to break the dry spell, scoring a goal with four and a half minutes left to play in the first half.

Jon Gaglio made some key saves in the closing minutes of the first half, holding the score to 4-1 at halftime.

To open the second half, Nicholas Yemma won the faceoff, setting JCU up for a scoring opportunity. Gill-Snow was able to find the net again with Berdysiak getting the assist. Gaglio continued to make key saves in the third quarter, but the Yellow Jacket offense was not slowing down, as they tallied another goal to make it a 5-2 game.

Berdysiak answered with a goal of his own less than a minute after, with Morrell gaining another assist on the night to narrow the score to 5-3.

Baldwin Wallace continued to play strong offensively, scoring on the man-up after a delay of game penalty on the Blue Streaks to take a 6-3 lead. With four and a half minutes remaining in the third quarter, neither team could score, creating an ever-important fourth quarter for John Carroll.

The Yellow Jackets kept their foot on the gas in the fourth quarter, scoring two unanswered goals in the first half of the quarter.

A key six-on-four situation halfway through the final frame gave the Blue Streaks an energy boost. Colin Morrisey took advantage of the penalties on Baldwin Wallace, finding the net with an assist from Berdysiak to make the score 8-4.

However, that would be the last goal scored in the game, as the Blue Streaks were unable to come out on top.

Tanner Gill-Snow led scoring for the Blue Streaks with two goals. Matt Berdysiak and Colin Morrisey each tallied a goal, as well. Morgan Morrell and Berdysiak had two assists apiece on the Blue Streaks' four goals. Jon Gaglio faced 40 shots, making 11 saves and having a .579 save percentage on the night.

The Blue & Gold have lost to Baldwin Wallace in the regular season now in the past four full campaigns, though all four years ended in tournament titles. JCU is certainly hoping for history to repeat.

The Blue Streaks will now head to Ada to play Ohio Northern Polar Bears on Saturday, April 1 at 1 pm.
