Stellar Pitching Helps Baseball Split With Ursinus

AUBURNDALE, Fla. -- Great offense in Game 1 and stellar pitching in both contests helped the John Carroll baseball team to a split with Ursinus. JCU won Game 1, 8-1, and lost Game 2, 1-0 at the RussMatt Invitational at Lake Myrtle Sports Park's Field #5.

Game 1

It took till the second inning of the afternoon matchup to see any runs cross the plate. The Blue Streaks would find themselves with two runners on base before recording an out after Ryan Funderberg walked and Chase Diosy was hit by a pitch. Michael Persichetti sacrifice bunted both men into scoring position, then a wild pitch and a Sean Connolly sacrifice fly gave John Carroll the early 2-0 lead.

JCU would push their lead to four in the very next inning with a Funderburg sacrifice fly to score Justin Hanley, which was followed by another wild pitch from Kieran Hollander that scored Jack Harmon

Hollander's day would end following a hit by pitch in the same at-bat. Command was an issue for the lefty sophomore, as he gave up four runs without allowing a hit. It was seven walks, two hit by pitches, and two wild pitches that led to the runs against him.

The Blue Streaks bats would find their rhythm following the change on the mound, as Hanley muscled a ball over the fence in the fourth inning to increase their lead to 6-0.

The Bears were able to trim the lead in the top of the fifth inning when a bases-loaded groundout by Solomon Griffith pushed their first run across home. Unfortunately for Ursinus, the rally stopped there as they stranded two in scoring position in the inning.

John Carroll stopped any hopes of a comeback when Perischetti put the finishing touches on the game in the bottom half of the inning by mashing a ball over the left center field wall and closing the scoring with John Carroll on top 8-1.

Jamon Higley and Maxwell Schumaker shut things down from the bump for the Blue Streaks. Higley went through five innings of work only allowing one run on three hits and striking out four. Schumaker went scoreless through the last two innings of the game, giving up three hits and fanning one hitter.

Game 2

In the back half of the twin bill, Ursinus wasted no time getting on the board. In the first inning, Will Kelly was able to sneak across home, following a Henry Darrow wild pitch, to grab the 1-0 lead.

All thanks to Dan Bass of Ursinus, that was the only scoring. The freshman threw all seven innings only allowing five hits and striking out eight in the shutout performance.

The John Carroll pitching staff had a good night as well. Darrow only allowed the single run on a lone hit and four walks. He added seven strikeouts in his 3.1 innings. Austin Miller closed out the game without giving up a run or hit and striking out three.

JCU left six runners on base throughout the game, and had a chance to tie in the seventh after Jared Orwell advanced to second on a wild pitch. However, Persichetti struck out during the at bat to end the threat.

JCU will face Anna Maria in a nine inning single game on Tuesday, March 7.  First pitch is set for 9:15 am.
