Despite Excellent Effort, Softball Drops Two to ONU at Home

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS -- On a beautiful sunny day at Bracken Field, the John Carroll University Blue Streaks took on a formidable opponent in the Ohio Northern Polar Bears in an important Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader. The Blue Streaks would drop both games despite an incredible team effort.

The Blue Streaks lost the opener, 1-0, before dropping a 4-3 loss in the second game.

Game 1
The first game of the day was a battle of the pitchers, with both John Carroll's Danielle Orendi and Ohio Northern's Ashley Lenser pitching complete games. Unfortunately, the Blue Streaks dropped a 1-0 defensive affair.

Through the first two innings, both teams would show off their pitching, with neither team tallying a hit until the top of the third inning.

In the top of the third, Ohio Northern would get their first hit off a Taylor Hilty single, but Orendi retired the next two batters, ceasing the threat.

During the bottom of the third inning, Gabby Hougan provided a spark for the Blue Streaks, staying strong in the batter's box and getting hit by a pitch. Kendall Trunzo later reached base on a fielder's choice, but Hougan would be called out at second. Alyssia Carmichael then singled to right field, moving Trunzo to second, however, a flyout to right field ended the inning with two runners left on base.

The fourth inning would again be a display of phenomenal pitching, with only one hit being allowed by the Blue Streaks. The score would remain notched at 0.

Ohio Northern opened up the fifth inning with a bang, as Ashley Lense singled to right field. The next batter lay down a beautifully placed bunt, advancing Lense to second base. Taylor Hilty then continued her nice day, as she reached first on a error, sending Lense to third. Mariana Alejandro singled to right field, opening up the scoring for the day and giving Ohio Northern a 1-0 lead. Lexie Genovese then made a spectacular play the following at bat, turning a 6-3 double play and ending the inning.

The sixth inning provided no scoring chances for either team, and John Carroll was down to their last chance in the bottom of the seventh inning.

Melissa Smith reached base on a walk, and sent Lexie Genovese to the plate with one out. Genovese singled through the gap in the infield, and the Blue Streaks tabbed runners on first and second. Gabby Hougan went down swinging and head coach Alex Lagesse pinch hit junior Serena Paterno. Paterno made great contact, but lined out to the shortstop, ending game one in a close loss 1-0.

Danielle Orendi allowed only five hits and tallied eight strikeouts.

Game 2
Ohio Northern wasted no time getting runners on base in the second game of the day. After the leadoff hitter grounded out, the next three Ohio Northern batters would single, loading the bases with only one out. That pressure did not phase Brianna Callow, as she maintained her composure and struck out the next two batters, getting out of the jam.

In the bottom of the first inning, the Blue Streaks were out for vengeance. After the first two batters struck out, Kaylen Odelli hit a ball hard to left center for a double, bringing up the power-hitting Mackenzie Stease. Stease blasted a ball to center field for a home run, giving John Carroll an early 2-0 lead.

In the top of the second inning, Ohio Northern would claw back off a Sydney Motylinski home run, making the game 2-1 in favor of the Blue and Gold. Callow remained steadfast, striking out the next two batters and getting out of the inning with minimal damage.

The third and fourth innings provided no more scoring, as both pitchers tightened up and displayed their skills.

In the fifth, Ohio Northern got a runner in scoring position, but yet again Brianna Callow struck out the next batter, ending the inning with no runs scored.

Ohio Northern would tie things up in the top of the sixth inning, as Sydney Motylinski hit her second home run of the game, making the score 2-2 late in the contest.

The tie was short lived, as John Carroll retook the lead in the bottom of the sixth, courtesy of Bella Carcioppolo. With two outs and Stease on first, Carcioppolo drove a ball to center field for a double, scoring Stease and giving John Carroll a 3-2 lead. Carcioppolo showed off her base running, as she advanced to third off a wild pitch, but the inning would end shortly after.

Ohio Northern was not going away without a fight, starting off the seventh inning with a lead off double by Callie Rosse, bringing Lauren Walls to the plate. Walls sent the ball over the fence in left center field, giving Ohio Northern a 4-3 lead. Abby Elliott would then single to left field, ending Callow's day on the mound. Callow finished the day with 6 innings pitched, striking out seven batters.

Freshman Emily Graves replaced Callow on the mound, retiring the next three batters. The Blue Streaks headed into the bottom of the seventh down one and looking for a walkoff win.

Unfortunately for John Carroll, Allie Bican would continue to be outstanding on the bump, sitting down all three hitters and putting a stamp on a 4-3 comeback win.

JCU drops to 13-11 on the year, 3-7 in OAC play.

The two close losses mark improvement for JCU historically, as the Blue Streaks lost to ONU today by a combined score of 5-3 after losing by a combined score of 19-0 in last year's doubleheader in Ada.

John Carroll will be back in action on Wednesday, April 19, as they will take on one of the top teams in the OAC standings, Mount Union.
